Birthdays, Canada Day, and fun in general

Whew! With Kyle being off on holidays we’ve been on “GO” mode for the past week. I finally have a moment to myself to give you all a bit of an update.

First of all – and most importantly – Isla’s birthday was a huge success! We had about 20 guests over to help us celebrate her first big milestone of her life. It was a little crazy, but our little girl was spoiled rotten! She loved all of her presents, and really enjoyed eating her cake! Kyle baked her a smash cake and I iced it, and instead of diving right into it she delicately picked off the icing flowers one-by-one and ate them. It was cute, but I ended up helping her smash her cake. I still can’t believe she’s a whole year old! I also found an idea on Pinterest for a time capsule for her. Basically, the guests write down what they predict Isla will be when she grows up, then the box is sealed and not opened until she graduates from high school. (Class of 2030 – WHAT?) I didn’t read a single one, so it will be interesting to see what everyone wrote! Here’s some photos from the day:

After a “recovery” day for Isla, we celebrated Canada Day on Monday! Kyle and I took Isla down to the park where there was all kinds of things going on – local artists selling their goods, food, entertainment, and info booths. There were a LOT of people, and it was crazy hot (I think it hit around 40°C/104°F?) but we had a pretty good time! We took Isla through the splash park and she absolutely loved it! Kyle took her through some kind of misting tower and she giggled the entire time. It just melted my heart seeing them bond like that.

I wouldn’t call Tuesday a “recovery” day since Isla had her 1-year immunizations that day. She got 4 shots, two in each arm, and it didn’t go over so well. There were tears (just hers) and lots of hugs given that afternoon. She got over it eventually, and now you’d never know that she had her shots except for a couple of little specks on her biceps.

On Wednesday Kyle’s best friend from high school was in the province from Calgary, visiting his family at their lake property just 45 minutes out of town. We loaded up in the morning after Isla had breakfast and headed to the lake for the day for a great visit with old friends. It was Isla’s first ride on a boat AND her first time swimming in a lake, and she loved them both! There were a few moments of hangry-ness (she gets ANGRY when she’s hungry, lemmie tell yah), and crankiness due to no real naps, but overall, it was an awesome day. She fell asleep on our way back across the lake, and slept the entire drive home. Every time Kyle and I head to the lake, it reminds us of how badly we want a recreation property of our own. One day we’ll get it done!

I’m sad that Kyle’s holidays are coming to an end because it’s been so nice to be able to hang out and spend time together as a family. We’re plotting another trip to the lake next month, as long as a weekend visit to a friend’s place for his birthday later on this month. Hopefully in the fall he can get some more time off and we can plan a trip to Vegas. We’ll see!

I’m going to wish my neighbours to the south a very Happy Independence Day! Let them fireworks fly tonight!

How was your long weekend? (Or what are your plans if you’re in the US of A?)

Eleven Months

At eleven months …

She:
– Weighs 22.7lbs (post-meal, I might add). Technically, she is now within the weight limit to go forward-facing in her car seat, but I think I’m going to wait just a little longer to turn her around.

– Has four teeth and seems to be cutting more, poor girl. I believe their her next two bottom teeth, but I’m certain I can also feel her next two top teeth right below the gums as well. Thank goodness they come is as pairs, because I don’t think either of us could handle 20 teeth coming in one at a time!

– Plays peek-a-boo, claps her hands and gives kisses (sometimes) when asked! She also seems to know how to shake her head “No” sometimes. This past weekend I asked her to clap her hands and she shook her head and didn’t clap. So I asked her again, and she responded again with head shaking! Are we beginning the rebellious phase already? I sure hope not!

– Can walk with her walker! While she’s been “couch-walking” for a while now, she hasn’t been brave enough to let go and walk on her own. I’m hoping the forward momentum of the walker will encourage her to walk all by herself. (Not that I’m necessarily ready for that – She’s busy enough just crawling!

– Loves to feed herself! We’ve moved from pureed-type solids to actual “chunks” of food, and she loves grabbing handfuls of food and shoving them in her mouth. She’s quite proud of herself, and gets pretty upset when I try to step in and help her eat, lol.

I:
– Am starting to come to realize that I’m really not going back to work in a couple weeks. I know the news broke quite some time ago, but I kind of pushed it aside and forgot about it. I need to start thinking about what I want to do career-wise, whether or not I want to stay in the journalism field or do something completely different and find a field with more economical stability.

– Am looking forward of the things to come this month. Kyle and I will be celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary in a couple days, Isla’s going to turn 1 (!!!), and there’s lots of fun things going on in between. June has always been a good month to us, so I’m hoping it stays that way.

– Really need to get my kid a haircut. It’s getting out of control, and she tends to pull her hair clips out of her hair when it’s the least convenient (like when she’s in her car seat and I can’t pull over to take it out of her hand). I promise to get it done before her first birthday next month!

Ten Months

At ten months … (A day late since we got home late from Vancouver yesterday!)

She:
– Weighs 20.6lbs

– Waves “Bye-bye!” It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. She’s always just stuck her hand in the air, but a couple weeks ago she actually started making the waving motion when someone says “Bye” and waves to her. She actually waved to my Grandpa as he was leaving, which made me feel great because she was pretty apprehensive about him since she hadn’t seen him in so long.

– Is stranger shy. This actually started about a month or so ago; there’s this front-end assistant at Costco who has made her cry twice just by talking to her, and now she’s really freaked out by most men. At her 9-month check up at the doctors? Total meltdown. He’s tall, loud and got into her personal space, and that didn’t go over well at all. She’s OK with most women, but prefers her mom, dad or grandma. I figured it would happen eventually, she was just too friendly for so long!

– Is on a bottle exclusively now. I’m certainly enjoying the freedom a bit more, and she’s enjoying the “control” she has over the bottle. (Playing with it, taking it in her hands and drinking from it without my help.)

– Walks along everything! She’s not walking on her own, or while holding my hands, but she’s walking along the furniture, walls, whatever she can lean her weight onto. It’s amazing and terrifying to see how far she moves in a short time frame. She’s definitely keeping Kyle & I busy!

– Has two more teeth – her two front teeth! We’ve been battling these two for the past couple weeks now, and I’m so glad they’ve finally popped through!

I:
– Like I said, am enjoying the freedom of not breastfeeding anymore. My boobs are grateful, and my milk is slowly but surely drying up. The toughest part was the first couple days after I stopped pumping to bottle feed. The engorgement was so painful and it was hard not to pump too much and only to do enough to relieve the pressure. But, I did it, and with the help of some cabbage, I’m getting there. (Yes, cabbage!)

– Am also mourning the loss of my boobs. They’ve gone all sad and small since they’re no longer producing milk. I’m going to have to invest in a good quality push-up bra. Hell, maybe I’ll just get a boob job when I’m done having kids. (I kid. Kind of. No really, I kid.)

– Am trying to decide what I want to do career-wise. Since I’m no longer going back to work in June, I’m  reassessing what I really want to do with my life. Journalism, as much as I love writing, is fizzling as a viable career. I’d love to keep freelance writing, but I need a more reliable career that isn’t going to crap out due to the economy. I have a couple ideas in mind, so we’ll see what happens.
