(Long) Weekend Update

Happy Back-to-School day! Isla doesn’t actually start school until Thursday, so we’re continuing life as normal for the next couple of days until that happens. (Read: SAVOURING EVERY MOMENT OF MY BABY STILL BEING AT HOME.)

Anyway, I hope you all had a great Labour Day long weekend! While it was a little smoky here, we still managed to make the most of our time.

{friday}
Kyle had some errands to run first thing in the morning, so Isla tagged along with him and I hung out with Norah at home. We didn’t get up to too much for the rest of the day! My mom came and picked up Isla when she was done work and had her over for supper, so Norah got a little spoiled while her sister was gone:

After dinner a carpenter friend came up to have a peek at our deck; he’s helping us rebuild it and we can’t wait to have it done! Sure, it will be chillly and we won’t be able to fully enjoy it until next summer, but still – it’s a project that’s been on the back burner for quite some time. It’s exciting to finally have it underway!

{saturday}
It was Kyle’s grandma’s birthday the day before, so we stopped by in the morning to say hello and wish her a happy birthday!

I suggested to Kyle the night before that we should go out to Horsting’s Farm for lunch. (Fun fact: Kyle and I both worked there eons ago!) I’ve been craving a big sandwich and a bowl of soup all summer, but with the forest fires it’s been nearly impossible to accomplish. Saturday was gorgeous, so we called up Kyle’s dad to see if he wanted to meet us there and drove out just before noon. My soup and sandwich hankering was satisfied, and we headed to his dad’s place for a visit. We headed home just before supper and the girls were both exhausted by the time bedtime rolled around.

{sunday}
Kyle organized a pool day/barbecue at his mom’s place and once again proved that’s he’s pretty dang awesome ;) He planned the menu, did the prep and all the cooking … basically I’m a lucky woman! Everything went off without a hitch and turned out great. The girls had fun swimming (Isla especially) and Norah was well, Norah:

{monday}
I woke up feeling horrible; I’m pretty certain I had a migraine because everything I did sucked and no amount of pain killers was helping. I managed to get the grocery shopping done but as Kyle and the girls with attest, I was a miserable bear for most of the day. The pain finally subsided after lunchtime, so I was at least able to enjoy the rest of the day. Isla went back down to Kyle’s mom’s for a swim and dinner, so Kyle, Norah and I hung out in the yard for a bit before making dinner and winding down for the night.

Overall, we had a pretty awesome weekend and it was a great way to wrap-up the summer. Like I said, Isla doesn’t start school until Thursday, but it’s pretty chilly today making everything seem that much more bittersweet. <3

How was your long weekend?

August Recap

Oops, I did it again? I totally didn’t mean to only post four stinkin’ times in August but what can you do? Life was either busy or I just didn’t have the oomph to sit down and write. But – here I am now updating you on what else we got up to during the second half of the month.

My dad turned 60 this month, so Isla, Norah and I headed out to Vernon for a couple nights to help him celebrate. My brother also flew in from Vancouver, so it was a fun, family affair! We spent our full day there visiting Davison Orchard in the morning and then after lunch/Norah’s nap we headed down to the lake for a couple of hours. Two of my aunts came into town to help celebrate as well, so it was good to catch up with them a bit!

We also made a quick jump over to Old Navy in Kelowna as well so I could do some back to school shopping for Isla.

Vernon

My brother hitched a ride back to Kamloops with me so he could visit with my mom for a couple of days before bussing it back to Vancouver. It was good to see him since we probably won’t see each other again until Christmas!

Last weekend we were invited by some longtime friends of ours to be tourists and ride the old steam train that’s in Kamloops. Named the Spirit of Kamloops, it takes you on a short journey across the river and back. While it wasn’t quite what I had expected, it was still pretty neat and the kids all had a blast, so that’s all that matters! Plus it was great to catchup with our friends; we’ve known each other since high school and have grown up so much since then!

Train

Finally, on Tuesday and Wednesday the RCMP Musical Ride was visiting Kamloops and the horses from the ride were being boarded inside the sports centre on the North Shore. The public was invited to come and “meet” the horses, so I thought it would be a good way to kill a couple of hours with the girls. While you weren’t actually able to meet all of the horses individually, there were a couple horses tethered near open Exit doors and you could pet them from the exterior of the building. Norah just adored them and even Isla got into petting the one. Even I thought the horses were stunning and pet them, and I’m slightly apprehensive around them. (Long story.)

RCMP

Now it’s the long weekend and we have no plans! Lets call it the “calm before the storm” as Isla starts kindergarten on Thursday. *sob face* I can’t believe how quickly the summer went by, but I’m impressed by how much we managed to do considering the forest fires.

How was your summer? Do anything special?

TGIF v.46

A high of the week was having the sun come out and being able to see blue skies! I know that the forest fires are still running rampant throughout the Interior, but having a break from the smoke has been amazing. We’ve been able to enjoy the yard and walks once again, and I’m so grateful!

We/Kyle has also started doing some demolition work on our back deck; we’ve decided to expand it by a couple of feet to make it more “entertaining friendly.” The stairs needed to be replaced anyway, so we figured we may as well replace the whole thing. It probably won’t be done until mid-September, but hopefully we get some bonus sunny days come the fall so we can enjoy it a little.

A low of the week was having to make some tough decisions in regards to Daphne’s health. In a nutshell, she’s old. (She’ll be 13 at the end of October.) We’ve put her on anti-inflammatories to try and help her aches and pains, but it’s only buying me time to come to terms with some tough decisions more than anything.

An internet find I loved was the Carpool Karaoke series on Apple Music. So far I’ve only been able to watch snippets here and there because I’m not a subscriber, but my mom is, so she may very well find me camped out on her couch one day binge-watching all the episodes!

The best money I spent was no money – my mom graciously gave us two zucchinis, green beans and cucumbers out of her garden, plus our grape tomato plants are out of control and providing us with tons of fruit! I love being able to eat vegetables (and fruit, I guess) right from our own gardens!

My favourite Isla and/or Norah moment was being able to take them outside. Nothing drives a woman more crazy than children who are also going crazy!

A song that has been stuck in my head is allllllll the kids’ songs. Specifically anything from Moana, Sing, and Trolls. Someone hold me.

My meals of the week were barbequed chicken & corn on the cob, heart attack mac & cheese, carne asadas, leftover spaghetti casserole. Nothing fancy!

My plans for the weekend are birthday parties!

I cannot believe how fast summer is going by – How was your week?
