Weekend Update

Whew, what a weekend!

If I could make any recommendations, it would be to NOT have kids three years apart to nearly the day. Isla and Norah’s birthdays are six days apart and so this weekend was all about celebrating.

Friday
It was Norah’s 2nd birthday! We decided to have family over for a birthday barbecue to keep things simple(r) and she had plenty of fun.

That helium ballon? She’s OBSESSED and has been dragging it around the house like it’s an appendage.

Kyle and I got her a balance bike and while she seeeeems like she’s enjoying it in that photo, when we took her outside on Sunday to give it a go there were tears galore. Mind you, it was hot and she had just woke up from a nap soooo … probably not the best idea in the world. We’ll give it another try when it’s a bit cooler and she’s in a better mood, lol.

Saturday
Saturday was Isla’s birthday party day! We opted to have hers the weekend before her birthday since the weekend after is Canada Day. She asked a while ago to have a bowling party, and since she’s obsessed with everything Moana we went with that “theme.” (Which really was a cake with blue-ish frosting, invites with Moana and Maui on them, and Heart of Te Fiti cookies as favours for her guests.)

I did not make these, FYI.

While her party was small she had a ton of fun with her friends. We lucked out and the bowling alley had all the glow and disco lights on, which didn’t cost us any extra. Woo!

After her party we had some friends over for dinner and we hung out outside. I don’t know what it was, but I had some crazy allergic reaction to something and my right eye got super swollen. It went down a little after I took an allergy pill, but it was so uncomfortable.

Sunday
It was a fairly “routine” day. Kyle went for a quick run in the morning as he’s training for his first half-marathon next month, so while he was doing that I took the girls grocery shopping with me.

After lunch Norah had a nap and I helped Isla work on a Lego set she got for her birthday. I forgot how much fun Lego is, but also how nit-picky I can be because trying to get an almost-5-year old to follow instructions is HARRRRD.

When Norah got up from her nap we had that whole balance bike incident as mentioned above, so we opted to just play in the backyard for a bit before I had to go to slo-pitch. Isla tagged along with me and had fun playing with the other kids at the field, and Norah got to have some quality Gamma time without her sister ;)

Now it’s Monday and I’m still SO exhausted from the weekend. I think it’s a double-mug-o-coffee kind of day.

How was your weekend???

Weekend Update

What a weekend our household had! Really, all the fun (if you can call part of it that) started Tuesday, but I’ll fast forward a bit to Thursday night …

{thursday} Norah decided that she’d chew on one of those round, cork, hot pot holders from Ikea Tuesday and stick the pieces up her nose. I pulled two pieces out with tweezers that night and thought I got them all. Nope. Fast-forward to Thursday evening, I’m giving her a bath and while washing her face she freaks out and starts sneezing after I wipe her nose. I look up her nostril (no easy feat since she’s now afraid from Tuesday’s incident) and bam – there’s still a chunk up one nostril. Really, you’d never guess something was wrong with her because she was breathing and sleeping normally. There was no way I was getting it so when Kyle got home from work I took Norah to the ER.

We waited around for about two hours before the doctor had the chance to look at her, but she was being so good. (Thank you, YouTube!) The ER doctor had to swaddle and sedate her since she was so fidgety (Can you blame her?), and he was unsuccessful in getting the piece out and referred us a specialist who was able to see us the next day.

{friday} I dropped Isla off with Kyle’s mom so I could take Norah to see the specialist. She was NOT HAPPY in the slightest to have more people holding her still and sticking things up her nose, but the ENT doctor (or, if you prefer the medical term, the otolaryngologist) was successful in removing the piece wedged up her nostril. Yay! She got to pick two treasures out of a big bin of “prizes” and we were happily on our way!

I had organized for a couple of Kyle’s friends to come stay the evening as part of Kyle’s birthday festivities (His birthday is tomorrow!), so Isla, Norah, and I decided we’d give them an estrogen-free dinner and headed to my mom’s. We came back home in time for bed and I got caught up on Grey’s and played way too much Xbox before turning in myself. (The boys stayed up waaaaaay late, lol)

Saturday morning sunrise!

{saturday} We had a relatively lazy day since the boys were feeling a little under the weather ;) In the afternoon Kyle and his buddy went for a drive with Isla to the candy store and Norah had a quick nap.

We ordered pizza for dinner because greasy food is the perfect hangover cure, and while Norah was picking her at her food we SWORE we saw her stick some of it up her nose. (The opposite of the one the specialist worked on.) Kyle helped hold her still while I looked up her nose, and there was definitely something up there, but I couldn’t get it. FML. We ended up plugging the opposite nostril and telling her to blow her nose, so she did, and after a few attempts ANOTHER piece of cork came out. FOR THE LOVE OF — !  I’m fairly certain that was the last piece, and I’m 100% sure that Norah is going to be the child that makes the grey hairs grow.

{sunday} Kyle made pancakes for breakfast (the best, according to Isla), and Norah and I eventually got to the grocery store to get our weekly shopping done.

In the afternoon Isla had a birthday party to go to at the bowling alley, so we dropped Norah off at my mom’s. It was her first time bowling and she had a blast!

We were exhausted by the end of the day and are looking forward to a quiet weekend next week!

How was your weekend??

Weekend Update

This weekend was a mixed bag of emotions: Stress, fun, laughter … it goes on! It went by super fast but thank goodness we have a long weekend coming up. Here’s what went down this past weekend:

{friday} The weather took an unfortunate turn for the worst and the snow started falling mid-morning, super lame because Kyle and I were supposed to be driving down to Langley to visit friends KID FREE. I had an appointment in the morning and then got Isla, Norah and Daphne loaded up right before noon and dropped them all off at my mom’s. The weather was only getting worse, but the mountain pass looked like it was in decent shape to drive through, so away we went! It really wasn’t too bad until we got to the Fraser Valley, and that’s when things started getting a little crazy …

Really, that section of road right before Chilliwack wasn’t too bad, but as soon as we got into the city things started getting crazy: cars in the ditch, heavy snow and the traffic – oh the traffic! It’s a general rule that a lot of people who live in Southern BC don’t have snow tires on their vehicles because the generally don’t get a lot of snowfall, and it really showed as we drove between Chilliwack and Langley. I think our average speed was about 25 km/hr and the roads were just slick with snow and ice. Nightmare! I’m amazed by how well Kyle kept it together.

Thankfully we arrived at our destination safe and sound and we were able to relax, unwind, and have a good visit!

{saturday} The best thing about travelling without kids? I got to sleep in! Sure, I woke up just after 8 am, but when Norah is usually up just after 6 am it was a wonderful change, lol. We had an awesome late breakfast and eventually figured we should pack up and head out since the weather definitely wasn’t getting any better …

Yes, that’s a truck in the ditch to the left.

The roads (again) between Langley and Chilliwack were HORRIBLE. The wind was just howling and in one 200m stretch there were 5 vehicles in the ditch. In only got marginally better outside of Chilliwack, but nothing worth breathing a sigh of relief over. It wasn’t until we got to Merritt that Kyle was able to relax a bit. It was soooo stressful and I’m so thankful that he was able to pull through that mess and get us home safely. Lord knows I couldn’t have. We picked Campbell up from his mom’s place, grabbed a pizza and decompressed at home for a couple of hours before I went down to my mom’s to pick up the girls and Daphne. (Who were all very happy to see me!)

{sunday} We had our “usual” Sunday affairs of laundry and grocery shopping. Norah decided to have a meltdown while we were shopping and was unconsolable unless I was holding her. Thankfully my old coworker took notice of my struggles and got someone to help me out to the truck with all of our groceries, which is the first time I’ve ever accepted an offer for help out. We got home and had some lunch, and Kyle took Norah for a quick drive in the truck so she’d go to sleep for her nap.

Of course, we tuned into the Super Bowl, mostly just for background noise/curiosity’s sake since neither of us pay attention to football, but I also wanted to catch the Halftime Show. Lady Gaga did not disappoint! Kyle made us an amazing roast for dinner and after the dishes were all done it was the usual bedtime routine of baths for the girls. Kyle got a run in on the treadmill since he has his first race of the year coming up next weekend. Fingers crossed the weather turns around a bit!

How was your weekend? Did the groundhog lie about the weather where you are?
