Weekend Update

While we had no solid plans for the weekend, it was a fairly eventful one!

On Friday we had two separate visits by some of our friends. Two of them stopped by for a quick hello while they were on their way to Calgary for the weekend, and one of them stopped by in the afternoon for a few hours. I always love surprise visits from friends, so that really made my day!

Friday morning I also re-wrote my insurance exam since I missed the passing grade last time by 6-friggin’-percent. I felt WAY better leaving the exam this time than I did last time; I don’t know if it was because my mind was more clear, or if the lady who supervised my exam was just nicer than the last, but I have a pretty good feeling about it this time.

On Friday evening Isla had a sleepover at my mom’s and Kyle and I went and watched The Expendables 3 at the theatre with some friends. The movie was horrible but we laughed the entire time because it was just that bad. When the movie got out we went out for a late dinner and caught up on life. In all, we had a super great evening despite how bad the movie was!

Saturday, however, wasn’t so great. Isla, with her sneaky ninja-like skills, somehow managed to waltz into the bathroom and grabbed the just-cooling-down-but-still-very-hot flat iron. She ended up burning three of her fingers on her right hand pretty good, so Kyle and I made a trip to the emergency room just in case. She cried the entire time, the poor girl, but we were in and out of the hospital in about 30 minutes. (A record, by the way. Usually ER trips take 2 hours or more, but I suppose when it’s a crying-in-pain 2-year old, things are kicked into high-gear.) It didn’t help that she had been up since 5:30 that morning, either. But as soon as we got home and settled down on the couch for some cartoons and much needed cuddles, she was sound asleep. (I’m sure the Advil and Tylenol the nurses gave her for the pain helped too.) And as soon as she woke up from her nap? You’d never even think she was hurt, other than the cute little “mitten” on her hand. Kyle bought her a GIANT cake pop from the bakery and she was as happy as can be.

August 23

Sunday was pretty lazy overall. I grocery shopped in the morning (how exciting), and went and played slo-pitch in the afternoon. We won our first game and lost our second, but they were good games overall! I got hit in the wrist with a line-drive I attempted to catch, so that feels pretty awesome today and I’m sure it’s going to leave a nice bruise.

Oh yeah! And I was also nominated for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! I was happy to dump a bucket of freezing cold water on my head in support of ALS. I know a few people who have had family members and close friends battle the disease, so it was an honour to raise awareness. Here’s my video:

That’s pretty much our weekend! Today I have to take Isla to see the doctor to have her dressing changed, then I think it’s going to be a trip to the store to buy dog food and maybe see if the Halloween costumes are out yet. I can’t believe that this coming weekend is Labour Day weekend already! It’s going to be hard saying goodbye to summer because this one has been SO great!

How was your weekend? What was the last movie you watched in theatre?

Project 365: August 17-23

August 17: Isla’s first encounter with a frog. It was tiny, but fear apparently has no reasoning. ♦ August 18: Hot summer fashion.♦ August 19: What started out as a little sunny patch for yoga turned into a cool spot to lay and take in the sounds of the thunder from above.♦ August 20: New bed! A big shoutout to The Little Big Bed Company for making this gorgeous frame for us! And once we fix up the dresser, we’ll finally have a grown-up room! ♦ August 21: Gearing up for the Majors.♦ August 22: (Double) Date night! ♦ August 23: When you burn your fingers on a flat iron, you get a cake pop as big as your fist.

Getting Crafty

Kyle and I had always planned on eventually moving Isla to a different bedroom once she got older. While we were originally going to make the move when she was to become a big sister, but since we had new carpet installed and we were moving furniture around anyway, we went ahead and relocated her ahead of schedule.

I also originally has plans to repaint her room, but with the new carpet I really didn’t want to risk getting paint on it. Instead, Kyle and I decided to let her eventually pick her own paint scheme if she wanted something other than the brown that’s currently on the walls. To make her new room seem more like a little girl’s room and less like the guest bedroom is was, we’re brightening up her space with bright accents and furniture. (Eventually she’ll have white furniture to match the bookshelf I redid for her.)

Other than that bookshelf, I also decided to repurpose some letters that spelled out her name. Isla was gifted it when she first came to the world, but we never did hang it because there was no real spot to put it in her nursery. Instead, I found a decent sized canvas at Michaels for $13 (with one of their magical 50% off coupons), took the (giant) can of purple paint that I had bought to paint the stripes in her nursery (seen here), and painted it.

After the first coat.

After the first coat.

It was super hard to see the paint coverage in the sunlight and I ended up missing some spots, so a second coat was definitely needed. The colour is definitely one that pops when it’s in the correct lighting!

After the paint had dried, I busted out the glue gun and simply glued the letters onto the canvas! It definitely could have turned out better, but when you’re dealing with wonky, uneven letters and hot glue, you just gotta eyeball everything and hope that everything is more or less even ;) Overall, I’m satisfied with my craftiness.

Please excuse the horrible lighting and wonky reflection. I swear, it looks better in person!

It really has helped brighten her room up, and Isla frequently points to it and says, “That’s Isla!” She also looks at it and attempts to recite the ABC’s, but whatever.
