Week in the Life: Wednesday

Morning // I wake up just before 6 a.m. as Kyle’s getting read to head out the door and he announces that there’s at least 6″ of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down. (He didn’t lie! At 6:15 I measured almost 8″ of snow on our back deck!) Since I slept amazingly, I decide to stay awake, so I grab my Macbook and finish off yesterday’s Week in the Life post. Of course, the morning I get out of bed early, Isla sleeps in, but oh well. Before Isla got out of bed I shovelled a “trench” along our deck so the dogs could find their way to the stairs. (Or else they’d pee ON the deck and that’s just not cool.) Isla wakes up and I make her breakfast (Cheerios with some Fruit Loops tossed in), and around 9 a.m. we bundle up to go outside to shovel snow. That takes me almost 2 hours, and then it’s time to shower and warm up before having some lunch!

Afternoon // Since Isla slept in we watch The Voice results show and then I put her down for a nap. She’s reluctant, but I tell her that if she naps, we’ll bake muffins when she gets up. That’s good enough for her, so she agrees and has a nap. While she’s sleeping I do a bit of freelance writing. I notice that Daphne’s having some trouble moving as well, which is concerning, but it usually resolves itself. Isla wakes up and we make these banana chocolate chip muffins! She really loves helping me mix the ingredients and cannot wait to have a muffin after dinner!

Evening // I throw together some shake & bake chicken, steamed carrots and mashed potatoes for dinner and sit down once Kyle gets home from work. After dinner, Kyle volunteers to clean up the dishes (best husband ever), and Isla and I hang out in the living room and watch the last bit of a movie that’s on TV. Soon it’s Isla’s bedtime and she chooses “Where’s Spot?” for her story. Kyle and I watch a couple episodes of Pawn Stars on the internet before heading to bed.

How was YOUR Wednesday?? Did you get any snow?

Week in the Life: Tuesday

Morning // Isla comes in and wakes me up around 7 a.m., and we slowly crawl out of bed. This morning she stated that she’d like eggs for breakfast, so I make her scrambled eggs and peel up a Mandarin orange for her as well. I sit down with a bowl of cereal and go through blog posts and Bloglovin while she eats and when she’s done it’s her favourite time of day – cartoon time! I call and make Kyle and myself chiropractor appointments for Friday, and make a call for Kyle, then I vacuum the house. Fun times! After that I shower, then give the bathrooms a quick clean. I really want to make banana chocolate chip muffins, so I search Pinterest for a recipe and save it for tomorrow. (My bananas are frozen so I’ll thaw them out first.) I sit down to watch the Voice and then cook lunch up for Isla and I. She made me a “picnic” lunch, but I convinced her that potstickers and rice would be tastier ;)

Afternoon // Isla naps, so I package the meat I bought from Costco yesterday and toss it in the freezer. Then I relax in bed and watch some Gilmore Girls until she wakes ups. (Ah, the little luxuries!) I also get an email about some freelancing and respond to that. When Isla wakes up we head outside and I shovel the little bit of snow that fell this morning, and then we wonder over to the mailbox. (Nothing exciting except for a bill and a newsletter from Kyle’s work. I can’t wait to start receiving Christmas cards!) I forget that dinner takes 2 hours in the oven so I franticly get it put together and toss it in!

Evening // Kyle texts me and says he’s going to probably be a bit late coming home from work because the roads are a little slick. Now I don’t have to worry so much about dinner being done at the right time. (Win!) He eventually gets home and we eat, and soon it’s bath time for Isla. (I tell her she’s going to have a bath and she responds with, “Yep, I’m stinky!” Kids, I tell yah!) After her bath, it’s story and bedtime, so Isla gives Kyle hugs & kisses goodnight (cutest thing ever) and amazingly she picks a different book for me to read to her – Green Eggs and Ham! Once she’s tucked in Kyle and I enjoy some quiet time and watch an episode of CSI that’s on the PVR, and then head to bed!

Moments of Motherhood: On becoming a SAHM

Today at the Armchair Mayor News, I talk about the tough decision parents have to make when the mother’s maternity leave is over and they have to return to work:

Here in Canada we are privileged to be able to take a year off of work after our baby is born to raise them and adjust to life as a parent. In other countries, there is no guaranteed maternity or paternity leave and parents sometimes have to return to work in as little as 12 weeks, unless the company they work for provides other benefits.

This column is not one to boast about how lucky we Canadians are when it comes to taking time off work. More so, it is about how hard the decision can be to either go back to work or to become a stay-at-home parent.

When you start to break down the financial numbers, sometimes heading back to the office doesn’t make any sense… [continue reading]
