  • Am I the only parent who doesn’t get emotional over their baby’s immunization needles? I feel like a bit of an arsehole because I don’t get upset or sad if/when they cry after their shots. I swear I love my kids, and I do console them when they get hurt, but getting hurt is a part of growing up! Sometimes things are only a big deal if you make it one – “Mountains out of molehills” if you will – and I’m a firm believer that kids feed off of their parents’ own reactions. If I’m calm regardless of how my baby reacts to her shots, then chances are that she’ll calm down faster as well. Of course, that’s just my belief/opinion and I’m sure it will ruffle the feathers of all kinds of hens …
  • Why do semi-truck drivers have to be such bullies on the road? Sure, I respect their size and all that – you won’t catch me cutting them off and I certainly understand their blindspots – but when they’re barrelling down the road at top speeds and tailgating the crap out of you? Not cool. The other day when I was returning home from the Lower Mainland I was cut off numerous times by truck drivers who were speeding along trying to make their deadlines. It’s no wonder why accidents happen so frequently down there.
(I will add that I got a good chuckle at a speed trap in a construction zone right before a big hill. We had to slow down to 60km/hr and I can only imagine how choked the truck drivers were because they couldn’t gain speed to tackle the hill. HA!)
  • I love how much my kid loves dance class. She looks forward to it every week and I’m happy to take her. What I don’t love is how I’m asked to put makeup on her for her final recital. SHE’S (barely) 4! I’m sure it’s quite normal and a part of the “dance culture” and whatnot, but I just don’t feel right putting mascara, eyeliner, blush and lipstick on my 4-year old. She’s going to arrive at her recital with her hair shellacked into place and that’s about it. If the teachers have a problem with it, too bad.
  • On a positive note I want to point out how amazingly stereotypical some of my fellow Canadians were while I was in Vancouver. We got mixed up catching the Skytrain and several helpful people helped us find our way, and when I was having a hard time putting the brakes on Norah’s stroller a nice man held the stroller still so I could get it done without it rolling away. Yay for Canadians! Yay for nice people!

  • There’s a lot of controversy/ruffled feathers over a proposed open pit mine that’s applying to start up just outside of Kamloops. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it but the strongest feeling I have is that I’m sick of hearing about it – Pros, Cons, whatever. Give me your sticks and lets stop beating a dead horse, mmmkay? Every “point” to be made has be reiterated so many times that it’s losing its power.
  • I was sifting through the weekly fliers and saw an ad for a “Mother’s Day Sale.” It was for vacuums. Show of hands if you’d be super pumped for a new vacuum for Mother’s Day. I sure the hell wouldn’t be. “Here you go, Mom! Now it will be easier to clean up after us!” (Unless of course, you do actually want a new vacuum. If that’s the case, it better be the fanciest vacuum available!)
  • I’ve seen a lot of SAHM’s (and some working moms) become consultants for various products, just as It Works, Jamberry, Tupperware, etc., and I’m curious to know whether or not it’s actually a viable way of bringing in an income. What are the startup fees? How much does it cost to stay active? How much do you actually earn? I’ve toyed with the idea of doing something like this, but I’ve also sworn that I wouldn’t become one of “those” people. (The fact that I’m not particularly socially outgoing doesn’t help either. Leading a party? Holy anxiety, Batman!) I don’t have anything against those who have made these ventures work for them, but I’m apprehensive of taking the plunge myself.
  • Why is it that some people take beer-league sports so seriously? It’s not the majors, you’re probably half-cut, calm yourself because it’s just a game!! That being said, it is a wonderful feeling to beat the team that insists on playing by all (and I mean ALL) the rules. Or one that gets caught trash talking about how badly they want to beat your team.
  • I would like to know why wasps are assholes. They are seriously EVERYWHERE this year; Kyle has already knocked down three nests in progress and they even seem to be avoiding the delicious traps we’ve set out. (They’ve even tried making a nest in our barbecue, to which Kyle lit their asses on FIRE.) Sure, we say they’re bad every year, but this year seems especially bad.

I guess that’s it for today!

  • Yesterday when I was at the park with the girls there was an older girl (maybe 10?) with her older sister (maybe 12?) and little brother (4ish). The 10-year old girl was dressed so scantily and provocatively that it made me nervous: Short-shorts, calf-high boots with pompoms (boots wit da furrr), and a super loose/baggy tank top that “showed off” her spaghetti-strapped sports bra and midsection. It was definitely not warm enough to be wearing something like that, and I was just horrified. Now, it’s spring break and maybe her older sister was “babysitting” while her parents were at work, but my word – I have some serious concerns about my own daughters dressing inappropriately when they get older. There’s no doubt that “Over my dead body” will come out of my mouth more than once.
  • ICYMI, Rob Ford, the former mayor of Toronto, passed away on Tuesday. While I’m not fully aware of his political policies, I understand that not everyone agreed with them (do we every agree 100% with anyone’s policies?) and have even read some “cheers” that he’s dead. All I can say to that is shame on those people. While yes, he was a little eccentric at times and maybe not a stellar mayor, he’s still leaving behind a wife and two daughters. He was still human.
  • I’m pretty sure allergy season has started and that makes me THE SADDEST.
