Seven Quick Takes

1. I am debating buying a 50mm lens for my camera. I think I can pick one up for $100 right now on sale, but I’m stumped. I currently use a 18-105mm lens on a Nikon D90 body. Would a 50mm lens take better photos than my current lens? So stumped. I know the 50mm would be better for portraits and landscape, but how much better? Help!

2. Thank goodness it’s Friday finally. Even though it was only a four-day workweek, it still feels like it took forever to get through!

3. This weekend, I’m going to make these cookies. The recipe is from Canadian Living, and it’s actually in a super-old cookbook my mom has (also by Canadian Living). Anyway, my mom used to make these chocolate chip cookies when I was little and she’d toss them into an ice cream bucket and into the freezer for storage. My childhood BFF and I would just eat them from the freezer, and so we called them Cookies from the Freezer. To this day we talk about them, and so I’m going to bake them Sunday. And the same friend is expecting her first child in a few weeks, so I sent her the recipe. It’s pretty amazing, really.

4. Yesterday I was asked to come into my boss’s office (the editor-in-chief) along with the publisher. TERRIFYING! I thought for sure I was canned for whatever reason. But – they didn’t shut the door, so that’s a good sign. As it turns out, unfortunately, my coworker’s husband is on the emergency transplant list and may have to leave at a moment’s notice – for three months. The publisher wanted to know if I’d be interested in filling in for her position while she was away. Much better news than what I thought!! So, I’m taking the extra work, and I’m pretty stoked about it.

5. Also yesterday I got to work to find an email in my inbox telling me I was to go to a press conference at 4:30. I was excited because it would’ve been my “big break” but bummed because it would’ve made me late for slo-pitch. As it turns out, the organizers of the conference weren’t very organized at all, and another reporter wrote up a brief instead. I’m bummed but glad that it didn’t work out. Only three weeks of slo-pitch left!

6. Don’t you just hate it when you go to have a sip of coffee but you’ve run out? That happens to be everyday. You’d think would’ve learned by now.

7. Kyle and I went for dinner at his aunt & uncle’s on Monday and we had these amazing little tacos with cheese, grilled rouladen, homemade salsa, blanched red onions and lime juice. OMG SO GOOD! We’re definitely going to try remaking them. We also had an Anaheim pepper stuffed with Havarti cheese. Love, love, love!

What foods are you loving right now? Any camera lens advice?

Seven Quick Takes

1. I’m a sucker for summer television programming. My favourite? Rookie Blue, which appears of Global TV here in Canada and on ABC in the U.S. It’s Canadian and OMG – Ben Bass is delicious. Sorry husband, but he is. Anyway, last night’s episode was amazeballs because two of the characters finally hooked up. Seriously, I’ve been waiting all season for it to happen. I know, rather silly to get excited about. In fact, I’m probably way more excited about it than I should be. Moving on …

2. Callie is moving down to Vancouver to go back to school today. Ugh. That means I have no friends in Kamloops anymore. Lame. What on earth am I going to do now?? I’ll happily take friendship applications. Actually, maybe not, because I tend to live my life like this most days:

I’m such a homebody. (Image via Pinterest)

3. Actually, remember the friend who decided to stop talking to me? I can’t remember if I blogged about it, but we went for coffee a little while back – in July I think? Anyway, we caught up a bit and it seemed like we started to patch things up. And then I didn’t hear from her again until Monday this week. *sigh* The great thing is her sister lives in the same townhouse complex as me, so it’s not like she doesn’t know if I’m home or not. (Bright yellow cars are pretty damn obvious). Oh well. Time to let it go (again).

4. My new favourite way to waste time? Polyvore and Pinterest, almost always at the same time.

5. It was my SIL’s (Holy crap, I have a sister in-law!) turn to draw the names for the Christmas draw. I have to buy for my MIL. Horrible. Kyle’s grandma has to buy for me. This could get interesting. Quick – what do I want for Christmas that’s $100?? I am probably the hardest person to buy gifts for because the things I want are almost always more than $100. AND WHAT THE HELL DO I GET MY MIL? I don’t even know! Good thing Christmas is a few months away still.

6. My mom’s lab Tanner is doing pretty good. They’ve gone camping for a week so he’s going to have fun and be spoiled. I guess the medication the vet gave him is doing a good job keeping the pain at bay. Still, it sucks to think about. I’m going to have to visit him when they get back next week. (Story about Tanner here)

7. I’m annoying at my Facebook people for posting these stupid “I’m 6 weeks and craving pickles”, etc., posts. Apparently it’s suppose to raise awareness for breast cancer (remember something a while ago about the colour of your bra that made the news?) but I just think it makes them sound ridiculous. Why on earth would you tie pregnancy to breast cancer, especially in a humourous way? Way to make people think you’re knocked up. I may be over reacting a bit, but I have my reasons.

That is all. Happy Long Weekend! I plan on doing nothing!

Seven Quick Takes

1. Today is Canada’s National Holiday – Canada Day! (I know, we’re so original, but why complicate things?) That means – Day off of work! My mom and I be heading down to Riverside Park to take in the sights and sounds of Canada’s Birthday. Every year there are tons of artisans, musicians, vendors, and multi-cultural sights to see. It’s pretty much my favourite day of the summer! Then, we’ll go for lunch at a delicious restaurant downtown. Yay summer!

2. Saturday Kyle and I are heading out to a wedding at a lake a couple hours out of town. One of his closest friends from high school is getting married, so it should be a fun day. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the drive. Kyle gets off of his last night shift that morning, so I have to drive – his truck. Yeah, it’s not much bigger than my car, but that truck is his baby and I don’t want to hurt it! Hopefully he’ll just sleep the entire way there.

3. Although it was a short one, I seem to have survived my first week in my new position at work. So far, I’m loving it. It’s quieter, I’m managing to keep myself busy, and I feel like I can really learn a lot. And I definitely can’t complain about the wage!

4. I’m slowing getting all the photos I chose back from my wedding photographer and can’t get over how amazing they are! They should all be done in a couple days and I can’t wait to share them! I’m currently looking for a program to make my own coffee table book out of our photos … thus far I’ve only found one for PC – Book Smart by Blurb. Oh, if I only had a Mac – I’ve heard iPhoto is amazeballs. So – If anyone has any suggestions for photo-book making software, let me know!

5. I’ve decided that you’ll never know if you’re ready to have children until you get pregnant and they’re here. Except a full post on this topic in the near future.

6. I’m willing to pay someone to come brush my dog on a daily basis. With the weather getting warmer and warmer, she just keeps shedding and shedding. It’s horrible. Sure, she’s fluffy and soft, but the hair – oh my word, the hair. It’s falling out everywhere!

7. Oh, and speaking of dog hair – remember when I said how my laptop was acting up? Well, I took it to the computer store, and the fan was all jammed up with dog hair. Figures! It’s all better now, and she runs so much quieter! Now to get my mouse fixed … it’s never ending for me!

What are YOUR plans for the long weekend? (And Happy Forth of July on Monday to my American readers!)
