Seven Quick Takes

Oh weird – it’s Friday and you get a list post! How original of me. I swear one day I’ll write a post that isn’t a list or meme. At least give me credit for switching it up and linking up to 7 Quick Takes today instead of doing “Listy Friday.” Thanks.

1. When I take sandwiches to work for lunch, I always wrap my lettuce up in a piece of paper towel and add it to my sandwich right before I’m going to eat it? Why?? Because lettuce gets soggy, and no one likes a soggy lettuce sandwich. I’m brilliant, I know.

2. With the last two weekends being crazy busy with Easter and then my Grandma’s Celebration of Life, I’m ready to just relax this weekend. My only goal is to take Daphne for a walk, providing that the weather cooperates. I think she feels neglected a little with all the attention Campbell has been receiving with his obedience training, so I think a little one-on-one time with me is well deserved. Plus, we could both use a little exercise. Lets just hope she doesn’t drag my pregnant, unstable ass down the road though.

3. Speaking of my Grandma’s Celebration of Life, it was beautiful and so many people came to show their support. I think it really gave my family a lot of closure. I had the honour of creating a slideshow/video tribute for my Grandma, which can be viewed here on YouTube if anyone so desires to watch it. It’s still so hard to believe that she’s gone, and every now and then I’ll have a, “What the hell?” moment, but it’s getting easier. The most surreal moment was when we (my mom, Grandpa and I) were cleaning up the memorial table after the service and my Grandpa simply put my Grandma’s urn in a velvety bag for safe keeping and transport, and ask me to hold onto her while he helped move some flowers to his van. I think that’s when it sunk in the most for me. There I was, “holding” my Grandma in my lap. Man, I miss her.

4. Not including today, I only have 8 more Fridays at work until I go on maternity leave. Or at least I will if all goes to plan and I don’t go into labour freakishly early. Which may or may not happen if the Canucks win again on Sunday and continue their NHL Playoff run. Being down 1-3 in the series is not ideal for my poor emotions. And really, if they lose, I’ll be both okay and not surprised by it all. I love my team, but they really dropped the ball in the playoffs.

5. Kyle’s mom bought us our nursery furniture! How amazing is that? I totally wasn’t expecting it at all! And, Kyle bought me the glider chair that I wanted for the nursery as well. So spoiled, I am. With the paint being damn-near done (just gotta remove the painting tape from the ceiling this weekend – Monday’s post will show off the room), things are finally starting to come together. I started to panic that nothing has been done since I’m due pretty much 9 weeks. WTF?

6. Does anyone else out there have a problem with flats making their feet stink? It’s a gross question, I know, but it seems that no matter what brand of flats I buy, they make my feet stink. Please note that when I wear socks/shoes they don’t stink, it’s just when I wear flats with no socks. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

7. Nothing is more ridiculous than trying to settle your dogs down after the TV makes a doorbell sound. Especially since one is still learning and one is retarded.

Sometimes, I wonder where my husband gets all his smarts and great ideas. Remember how he totally surprised me for Valentines Day with a massage gift certificate? Well, he suggested I make it for a Friday after work so it makes a great kick-off to my weekend. Such a great idea!! I love how he’s always two steps ahead of me in every situation.

I’m thinking it’s about time that I go and buy paint for Baby I’s room. I picked out the colours a couple weeks ago, and now that I’ve let it stew in the back of my mind for a little bit, I decided that’s what I’m painting the walls. What colours are we going with? Why, I thought you’d never ask!

The Internet does NOTHING for the colours – they’re much prettier in person! “Sun Glint” is a light, creamy, yellow-white which will be the main colour of the walls. Purple Cream looks more pinkish-purple (but more purple than pink, if you understand what I mean), and it will be the colour of the stripe in the room, as well as the border on the ceiling that’s currently brown. I’m seriously in love with these colours! And? THEY’RE NOT PINK! I wanted to avoid pink walls at all costs, since the bedding and accessories we’ll get will probably have some pink in them anyway.

Allow me to get all “awkward moment conversation” on you and talk about the weather. Recently in Kamloops, it’s been pretty f-in gorgeous. Like, I haven’t had to bundle up in a sweater 24/7 gorgeous. (Although that may just be pregnancy hormones making me sweat to death.) Yesterday we had blue skies, clear roads and it was wonderful. Yesterday morning, I woke up to this:

I actually first witnessed the snow around 5:30 a.m. when Kyle was heading to work, but that’s beside the point. I guess good ol’ Punxsutawney Phil wasn’t lying about there being more winter ahead. As of 4:30 p.m. yesterday it was still snowing. FML.

I should probably explain the trampoline in the photo too, although it doesn’t need much explanation. We/Kyle bought one last weekend to use for exercise. As childish as it may sound, he’ll jump on it for at least an hour at a time, which is a great cardio and leg workout. We actually had a trampoline before we bought our townhouse in 2010, but sold it due to the obvious lack of space our townhouse had yard-wise. One of the main reasons why we bought our full-size house was the amazing yard, which we could probably fit two more trampolines into! I’m sure our neighbours think we’re a little strange, but trampolines seem to be in every backyard in our neighbourhood! We’ll just have to have our friend’s kids over to jump on it so we don’t seem so silly.

I am a little miserable that everyone and their dog seems to be on Pinterest now. All I see one Facebook is people asking for invites and what they’re pinning. Ugh. I figured it was only a matter of time before the rest of the social media world caught onto it. But, maybe since they did, someone out there will buy me this amazing infinity scarf that I keep drooling over:

It would look seriously amazing against my black wool coat! I may just have to cave and buy it for myself. Believe it or not, I’ve never actually bought myself a scarf; I’ve always had them gifted to me!!

Sometimes I wonder why/how people find my blog by searching the weirdest things. Some search terms that have led people to my blog include “joy strap-on”, “dog mermaid”, “what are some crazy shit that happens when your pregnant”, “pregnant wetting”, and “if you don’t poo for a whole year facts”. Those are just some of the gems I found in my site stats. Hilarious? I think so! And really, mentioning them in this post is only encouraging them. Oh well. I think some of them are too funny not to share!

I’m still in search of a delicious-yet-easy vanilla cake recipe! If you have one you’d like to share with me, please email it my way! I’m planning on making Kyle a cake for his birthday, but I have never made a vanilla cake before (only chocolate).

How’s the weather in your neck of the woods?
What search terms (bizarre or not) have brought visitors to your blog?

Seven Quick Takes

Valentine’s Day is next week and I could care less about it. Kyle and I usually don’t do anything special for it, so it’s not a “big deal” holiday to me. You better believe I’ll be getting nauseous reading everyone’s “Aww, my man bought me flowers/a teddy/a mushy card” posts on Facebook. Perhaps I’m just not the die-hard romantic like some people are. I will say that Kyle and I will be going to my monthly doctor appointment together. I think hearing our baby’s heart beat will make for a pretty decent day. :)

I’ve started a baby registry and have a total of 6 things in it. It doesn’t help that the website is being lame, but what one earth do I add to it? So far I have a Bumbo chair and the tray, a baby monitor, a baby bath, a glider/ottoman and a wipes warmer. Borrrr-ing. Any suggestions on what I should ask for?

–3–

Speaking of baby stuff – one of Kyle’s coworkers is a father to a daughter who has grown out of a TON of baby stuff – clothes, toys, stroller, etc., and wants to give it all away to us! I’m in awe of his generosity and can’t wait to sift through all the goodies when it arrives. Anything I don’t need or want I’ll donate to someone in need or to charity.

Kyle and I were supposed to head to Vancouver tomorrow for the day to meet a dog we were interested in adopting. As it turns out, he unfortunately showed some behaviour on the weekend that made him not as great a match as he originally sounded like, so we’re no longer making the trip. We’re a little bummed, but we’re glad the doggy adoption agency is looking out for both our and the dog’s best interest. There are some dogs that will be available in about a month’s time, so I’ll keep you posted on what goes down. I’m still not 100% ready to share all the details behind why we’re choosing to adopt or what kind of dog we’re adopting. I’ll save that post once we do adopt!

Kyle’s birthday is at the end of the month and I told him that I’d make him a vanilla cake. Newsflash: I’ve never actually made a vanilla cake from scratch before, I’ve only ever made chocolate cakes! So – if anyone has a vanilla cake recipe that makes a mean, delicious and rich/flavourful cake – please send me the recipe or link!! No worries about icing recipes – I’m a vanilla icing making champ! All this also reminds me that I have to actually go out and buy some cake pans, since I apparently don’t have any. What?

Last summer, when I quit Job #2, I left behind a measly pension. Last month I got a letter in the mail saying that I had two options: to either wait and receive about $30/mth when I retire or to get a nice payout in 4-6 weeks. Guess which option I took? If you’re not into guessing: PAYOUT! Yay! It’s like free money that was mine to begin with. So now, I’m crib shopping! SO EXCITING! Toys R’ Us actually just sent a flyer out that has a gorgeous crib and dresser for sale, so I’m thinking I’m going to go buy it. *squeee*

I suppose I can announce that our baby girl is going to be known on my blog as Baby I. (That’s an I, as in ice, igloo, iguana. Not an L or 1.) Now you can start guessing what we’ve picked for a name! (Not that I’m going to tell you anyway ;))
