Pet Whisperer

Last week, I had the pleasure of cat-sitting my favourite step-cats for Melissa. She went away to her home island for the week, so I made sure my favourite friendly kitties were fed and taken care of!

Day one included me discovering the door to her basement suite was open. Not cool! Luckily the cats were both inside and in one piece. Whew! After that I made a lovely sign for the door to make sure the door stayed closed. (Her landlord has the place up for sale and realtors have been in and out). The sign, in my opinion is awesome:

Nothing says you mean business like electrical tape, right? Right! Anyway, so the door was always shut and the cats never escaped, leaving me with not having to come up with excuses that the cats were long gone. (“Yeah, they were taken hostage by the ambassadors of the zombie apocalypse … Sorry?”)

Anyway, the cats loved me, more or less. Atticus loved me the first day I arrived and my last day of cat-sitting, which didn’t surprise me but it’s a step up from the last time I cat-sit. Thomas, on the other hand, loves me (or probably most people) and was at my feet every second, rubbing against my legs and making my dogs jealous!

Sir Thomas, the loving, regal one

Atticus, the “I’ll love you when I feel like it” one

I also fed my mom’s animals on Saturday since my step-bro had to work late and the dogs and cat are programmed to eat at the same time every day! (Our parents went to Palm Springs for a week – Lucky!)

They were excited to see me (as always!) but I wasn’t sure if it was actually for me or just because they were hungry. Not that it matters; I love my Tanner, so it was good to see him <3 It’s cute how they all lined up in a row to eat:

Tanner, Squirt and Mickey

Anyway, since I didn’t let any of the animals escape, go hungry or have them accidentally lock themselves in a room to pee on everything (Yeah, it happened once), I say I’m a darn-good pet sitter! I much prefer it to babysitting, that’s for sure!

So, which do you prefer, pets or kids?

Ten (+1!) on Tuesday

Here’s another edition of Ten on Tuesday, brought to you by Roots and Rings!

1. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

It’s gotta be Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked. Brownie bits and cookie dough? Yes please!

2. What is your earliest memory?

It would probably be falling head-first into a lake when I was about three. I was feeding ducks on a dock and my grandpa told me, “Don’t stand too close to the edge or you’ll fall in!” So what did I do? Fall! I came back up with a handful of weeds. Awful.

3. What is your earliest memory of a dessert?

Odd question! It was probably my awesome birthday cake that looked like a caterpillar. You’d be so jealous of it.

4. Do you have any recurring dreams?

I always seem to dream that my teeth are falling out. Apparently that means I have vanity issues. Woo-hoo!

5. Have you ever dreamed about dessert?

I hardly ever have food dreams, which is surprising since I LOVE food and crave different foods all the time. You have no idea. Kyle thinks I’m pregnant all the time because I’ll crave cupcakes one minute and hot sauce the next.

6. What is one thing (aside from a cell phone or computer) that you cannot go the entire day without?

Saying “I love you” to Kyle. :) Mushy, but true!

7. What is one dessert you could go your entire life without ever having again?

Pudding. It’s a dessert, right?

8. If you could go on vacation tomorrow, where would you go? (Assume someone else is footing the bill, but within reason…so “the moon” won’t work)

Bora Bora, hands down. Warm, sunny, exotic … what else could I ask for?

9. If you could have any dessert tomorrow, what would you have (assume someone else is buying it for you. Within reason though, no “gold sprinkled ice cream cones.”)

Cupcakes from the place down the street from my office. I’d be happy with one of each flavour :)

10.  What was your first impression of your significant other? If you’re single, what was your first impression of your best friend?

I honestly don’t remember because we were about 6-years-old when we first met! I probably thought his glasses were huge and that his hair was weird. (It was the early 90’s after all!)

11. What is your first impression of dessert pizza? (Personally, I think it’s weird. I love dessert but I don’t want any on my pizza.)

I’ve never had one! I always thought that the Dairy Queen Blizzard Pizzas (or whatever they were) were weird looking. I mean, now do you eat it? On another note – Kyle LOVES pie but HATES meat pie.

Man, all these dessert questions have got me all hungry! :P

Where does it go?

Friendship is a funny thing. When you’re young, you’re bold and walk up to anyone on the playground, asking them innocently “Do you want to be my friend?” They say yes and the memories start being made.

Today, you find new friends where you can. Forced socialization during your university classes, coworkers you get along with, the significant others of your significant other’s friends; the list goes on. Some of these friendships end up being strong, sturdy friendship that last forever; others will  simply be acquaintances where you say a simple “Hey, how’s it going?” in the grocery store or a generic “Happy Birthday, have a good one!” on Facebook.

I have never had a friend where I could not talk to them for three or more months and then meet up with them and have it be like we were never apart. I have friends who I don’t see in that amount of time, but I still talk to them.

It’s a strange feeling when you think you’re losing a friend. You send them texts and messages and they don’t reply, or you get a strained “Hello, Goodbye” in passing. It’s super confusing when you once considered the person your best friend. Do you keep trying or do you let them come to you when they’re ready, going on with life as you normally do? Do you ask them, “Hey, are we still friends or what?” or ignore it?

My friends mean the world to me and it’s confusing when they stop talking to you for no apparent reason. An explanation would be nice.

Why are friendships sometimes more work than they should be? Where do they go when they suddenly disappear?
