August Recap

And just like that, summer is done and school is back in session! We had a pretty decent August – the warm weather finally decided to show up and we were able to enjoy the heat!

At the beginning of the month Kyle, the girls, and I went with some friends to Atlantis Waterslides in Vernon and the kids had a blast! We spent practically the whole day there and were completely exhausted by the end of it, but it was definitely worth it.

We also were able to take full advantage of the pool at Kyle’s mom’s – the girls have both come a long way with their swimming skills over the summer! Lessons over the fall/winter should be a breeze for both of them with the amount of practice they had!

Over the BC Day long weekend we went to the local marina/beach for a day and the girls had the best time ever! It was our first time going and I was pleasantly surprised! The beach was so wonderful and sandy, and while the water was busy with boats, the swimming area was great and well-marked so the boats didn’t cross over. There’s even a little restaurant/ice cream shop, so the girls were treated by grandpa to cones.

Isla had the amazing opportunity to audition to perform onstage with the Moscow Ballet in November when they come to town with The Great Russian Nutcracker, but in order for her to audition she had to learn how to ride her bike without training wheels. (Call it a lesson in discipline, if you will.) It took a couple afternoons and evenings of trying, but eventually she figured it out and can now ride fairly confidently on two wheels!

That being said, she earned Kyle and I’s approval to audition for the ballet and was successful in earning a spot on stage! We’re pretty proud of her and she’s super excited to be a part of a real ballet!

Mid-August the girls went for a sleepover at my mom’s and Kyle and I went out to the Little Shuswap Lake to visit with friends who were visiting from Calgary! It was a beautiful day and it was lovely to have a little kid-free getaway. ( I only felt slightly guilty that they missed out, but good times were coming their way anyway!)

The girls and I headed over to Vernon to visit with my dad for a couple of nights and help celebrate his birthday with him! While it rained almost all day our first day there, there was a short break in the afternoon so we were able to head over to Davison Orchards to check out the animals and all the fun stuff they have there! The ducky races were probably the highlight of that excursion!

During our second day there we headed over to Winfield to visit Kangaroo Creek Farm! It’s such an amazing little hidden gem and the girls always have the most amazing time while they’re there! This year they were able to hold parrots on their shoulders, which went way better than I had anticipated. (They are super laid back birds and very well socialized!)

After the kangaroo farm we headed back into Vernon for lunch and then did a quick wardrobe change for the beach! The weather was perfect and the girls spent all afternoon playing in the water and sand. I’m certain they’d spend an entire day there if I let them.

Oh, and what started out as mermaid tales turned into me just completely burying both Isla and Norah in the sand! They thought it was hilarious and thank goodness my dad had brought this umbrella or their faces would’ve fried in the sun!

That was about the end of our family adventures for August! The girls did go on a camping trip this past weekend and Kyle and I went out and bought 125lbs of tomatoes for canning, so you can guess what our future holds for us!

Isla had her first (partial) day at school today and her first full day will be today! Norah doesn’t start preschool until next week, but she’s extremely excited and can’t wait to go!

How was August for you?!

July Recap, Part 2

Check out Part 1 of my July recap here.

Just over 22 years ago, my mom took me to my first ever concert – the Backstreet Boys! A fan for life, I have been. So when it was announced that they would be coming back to Vancouver I just had to try and get tickets! Obviously, I was successful, and last weekend my mom and I road tripped once more to live out my fangirl dreams!

We left early Friday morning and made pretty good time getting into downtown Vancouver considering there was quite a bit of congestion and traffic. We were staying with my brother so we swung by his office to pick up keys and a parking pass before making our way to his place!

The view from his apartment was pretty stellar, as long as I didn’t look down!

After dumping our stuff we took the sea taxi across to Granville Island to kill some time/pick up things for dinner while we waited for my brother to get off work. We also took a little walk along the beach before the humidity got to us and we had to retreat back to the apartment.

Once my brother got home from work we went out again to get a few groceries for breakfast and to make a quick stop at the liquor store. Fun note: I was asked to leave the liquor store for not showing my I.D. even though I wasn’t buying anything. (My brother was already in line paying and I was just standing there beside him.) So that was hilarious! We went back to the apartment and had an awesome dinner before venturing out again. Vancouver was gearing up for Pride Week, so there was a bunch of free entertainment going on by the Art Gallery, including Drag Queen dance lessons, so that was fabulous to watch!

Saturday morning I was able to check a run on the Seawall off of my Run Route Bucket List! One day I’d love to run the Seawheeze, but until I’m prepared for that, this was the next best thing. The views were pretty spectacular, especially as the sun rose over English Bay!

Post-run selfie with the Burrard Street Bridge!

By the time I was done my run I was hot and disgusting, so I headed back to the apartment and sat myself in front of the fan while I waited for my mom and brother to wake up.

After breakfast my brother thought it would be fun to go to the Stanley Park Pitch & Putt. It was actually super fun and we laughed so hard! We were starving by the end of the round so we found a place to have some lunch. Lucky for me, they were still serving brunch, so I ordered a crab cake eggs benny with a pineapple margarita, and it was delicious!

After lunch we ventured towards Robson Street and meandered to the Jack Poole Plaza to check out the Olympic Monument solely because I had never seen it in person before. (#TouristMode) It was a little underwhelming but the people watching was good!

We slowly made our way back to the apartment to relax before ordering dinner (Door Dash is amazing in Vancouver) and getting ready for the concert! We were about a 1/2 hour walk away from Rogers Arena, so we left with plenty of time to navigate the streets and find our seats!

20190727_195825

The opening act started almost right on time (which happened to the the 16-year-old son of one of the Backstreet Boys, which made me feel wicked old), and then … it was SHOW TIME FOR THE BACKSTREET BOYS!

20190727_220126

Let me tell you, they seriously put on an amazing show, and I’m not just saying that as a life-long fan! They nearly performed for 2-hours straight, singing all of the classics as well as a few new ones off their latest album. The audience was electric and I am so glad that I got tickets to this show. My inner 11-year old is very happy with my adult self, is what I’m saying!

We arrived back to my brother’s apartment just around midnight and I promptly fell asleep, mostly because I was exhausted. (I logged just over 35,000 steps according to my FitBit!)

On Sunday we managed to hit the road at a decent time and casually made our way back home! As much as the break was wonderful, I missed Kyle and the girls and was happy to be reunited with them!

So with that, July was a pretty amazing month and I’m looking forward to whatever August has to bring!

July Recap, Part 1

We are half-stinkin’-way through summer! Can you believe it? I can’t. Life has been pretty hectic and I haven’t been able to set aside much time for the blog other than quick book reviews, so here’s Part 1 of what went down this month:

After the Canada Day long weekend, Isla and Norah got to go on a 5-day camping trip with my mom and stepdad! The weather wasn’t super great but they both had an amazing time – it was Norah’s first time camping with them and she was jazzed, to say the least! Kyle and I were also very thankful for my mom and stepdad taking them as well – it was wonderful to have a meal together without having to tell someone to eat their supper or to have “just one more bite,” haha!

Really, the weather was super shifty all month, but we took full advantage of the sunnier days by spending time outside and visiting the splash park:

We also took a day trip to a lake to hang out with Kyle’s mom and stepdad while they were camping. They have kayaks, so we were able to borrow those and paddle around the lake for a little bit, and I borrow the kiddie kayak from my mom and Isla got to do some paddling as well! We also went on a little hike/walk around the provincial campsite as well, and both girls were exhausted by the end of the day. We were barely 5 minutes into the drive home and Norah had passed out hard in her carseat.

At the beginning of the month Kyle had stumbled upon an AirBnB listing for a cabin at one of our favourite lakes to visit, and it just so happened to be available during his week of holidays in July! We booked it for two nights, and my goodness, it was amazing! I would hardly have called the space we stayed in a cabin – it had full amenities and was super spacious and comfortable! (And to be able to shower off at night was SO luxurious, lol) Really, it was borderline glamping, haha. While it wasn’t lakefront, we were only a 10 minute walk from the boat launches and a 5 minute drive from the public beach! The cabin even allowed pets, so both dogs were able to come with us.

The girls had a blast swimming and playing in the water during the day, and we made s’mores after dinner both nights. Overall it was AMAZING and I hope we can book it again next year!

The water wasn’t nearly as warm as I’d like it, but these two crazies didn’t mind at all!

Take a stab at how many shots I had to take to get this single photo …

Overall, I think our family time in July was spot-on! We made the best out of every moment we could, and I think it worked out beautifully! I think we had a great blend of adventure and R&R.

Are you a camper or a “glamper?”

Tomorrow I’ll post Part 2 of my July recap, which will be my trip to Vancouver to see the Backstreet Boys in concert!
