A Place I’ve Travelled To

I haven’t really been to many places fun or exciting. Vancouver several times, Palm Springs once in Grade 9 (all by myself!), and random locations for soccer trips during high school. But the craziest place I’ve been to is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; not really that exciting, until I tell you that it was in the middle of January.

I’m talking -35°C plus wind chills. Yes, January in Saskatoon is a bitch.

So why on Earth would I go? Well, it was for the 2009 Canadian University Press (or CUP) Conference with my awesome student newspaper co-workers. And it was a hell of a time! There was a lot of drinking, a lot of sleeping (who knew that a 3-hour time change would be so hard on a person?), and a lot of just trying to avoid the cold weather.

I also visited a random statue of Ghandi, fell into a snow bank, and toured a newspaper. All in all, despite the cold, it was a lot of fun, and a lot of fabulous memories were made, especially with Mel.

My favourite movies

This is a broad topic, now isn’t it? Do you want my all-time favourite movies? My favourite movies of this year? My favourite childhood movies? How about a break down of all three? My five favourites from each category? In no particular order? Okay!

All-time Favourites:

  1. The Shawshank Redemption. I mean, Morgan Freeman narrating the way only Mr. Freeman can? I wrote a movie review for a 2nd-year English class and got an A on it, that’s how much I love this movie.
  2. The Green Mile. Michael Clark Duncan is a big, scary man for the most part, but his role in this movie just makes me want to bawl my eyes out. And Tom Hanks is pretty much brilliant in all films he’s in.
  3. The Notebook. Ah, how I love a good mushy-gushy, bawl-fest of a romance movie. The only Nicholas Sparks flick I’ve watched but not read. And Rachel McAdams is one of my favourite actresses.

Movies from this year: (Which for some reason all happen to be “blood and guts” movies…)

  1. The Expendables. Who wouldn’t love all of your 80’s and most of your 90’s and 00’s action movie stars all in the same movie? Kyle actually watched this one a second time in theatre just so I could go watch it again. Woo!
  2. The Town. Ben Affleck did an amazing job with this movie, in all aspects (acting, writing, directing). I was quite surprised by this movie.
  3. The Book of Eli. This movie is actually very similar to the Fallout video game, which made me love it. It has quite the twist at the end too!

Childhood favourites:

  1. 101 Dalmatians. This movie pretty much solidified my love for dogs at a very young age, and made me afraid of crazy women with fur coats and two-toned hair.
  2. The Little Mermaid. Who wouldn’t want to be half-fish, half-human and have a best friend by the name of Flounder?
  3. The Lion King. Aww, Simba, you make me cry every time!

A picture of something that makes you happy

A lot of things make me happy in general: pay day, food, shopping sales, unicorns, watching a spider die … But really, there’s only two things that make me the most happy:

They’re both there when I need a good hug, love me no matter what, make me constantly smile, and are both great listeners. (Kyle usually gives me more constructive feedback though, lol!)

I don’t know what I’d do without either of them! They just make my world go ’round :)
