1. You’re packing for a week long vacation, do you pack ahead of time or wait until the last possible minute to pack?
Usually I pack two days or one day before I have to leave. That way I’m less likely to go through my bags and wonder, “Did I pack that? What about that?” So, not completely last minute, but not completely way ahead.

2. Are you a light or heavy packer?
I’m a relatively heavy packer, though I know worse. My suitcase is pretty small, so I don’t get too carried away. I like to be prepared!

3. What are your favourite road trip snacks?|
Something that’s easy to eat while driving, so chips, candy, etc. I usually grab a bag of Miss Vicki’s Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar chips – my favourite!

4. Do you take any reading material along?
It depends on the trip. When I went to Saskatoon – yes, because it was boring half the time. If I have a lot of activities planned, then no. If I get bored I’ll pick up a magazine or something.

5. Do you prefer to drive or fly to your vacation destination?
I do enjoy flying but it’s so stinkin’ expensive to fly short distances in Canada! So, drive on! Plus, I can sing in my car and no one can hear me.

6. What is your favourite time of the year to take your vacation?
Probably in the spring, although I haven’t done any travelling in a long time.

7. Where is your favourite place to vacation?
At a lake. One day I hope to be one of “those” people who can tell people, “Oh this weekend we went to the lake house”, to which they’re respond with “I hate you” glares. ;)

8. You are vacationing in the mountains, what is your favorite thing to do while there?
Hike, and at the same time, run from mosquitoes!

9. You are at the beach for your vacation,  do you like to take it easy on the beach or play all day in the water?
I’d probably take it easy and only go into the water to cool off.

10. While your on vacation do you prefer to eat out every night or cook some of your own meals?
Well, it would depend on where we were going! If the place we were staying in had some sort of a kitchen, then I’d definitely cook some of my own food. If it was an all-inclusive resort, then I’d gorge myself!

What I’m Reading: Secret Daughter

What I'm Reading

Today is my first book review post, so please don’t judge me by the horribleness of this post! I don’t think I’ve done a book review since my university program, and even then it was a crappy attempt. But – I shall try and see where this leads me! I even made a button and everything!

Secret Daughter
By Shipli Somaya Gowda

From Amazon.ca:
“On the eve of the monsoons, in a remote Indian village, Kavita gives birth to Asha. But in a culture that favours sons, the only way for Kavita to save her newborn daughter’s life is to give her away. It is a decision that will haunt her and her husband for the rest of their lives, even after the arrival of their cherished son.
Halfway around the globe, Somer, an American doctor, decides to adopt a child after making the wrenching discovery that she will never have one of her own. When she and her husband Krishnan see a photo of baby Asha from a Mumbai orphanage, they are overwhelmed with emotion for her. Somer knows life will change with the adoption, but is convinced that the love they already feel will overcome all obstacles.
Interweaving the stories of Kavita, Somer, and Asha, “Secret Daughter” poignantly explores issues of culture and belonging. Moving between two worlds and two families, one struggling to survive in the fetid slums of Mumbai, the other grappling to forge a cohesive family despite their diverging cultural identities, this powerful debut novel marks the arrival of a fresh talent poised for great success.”

I’ve always enjoyed books that tell stories through different people, and Secret Daughter was wonderful to read. With each chapter rotating through the stories of each character, it was hard not to put the book down! Plus, the chapters were shorter than your average book – much easier to read I find!

Now – when I first heard about this book I was skeptical. I know there’s a lot of politics behind child birth in India and I was afraid of a more political book, but that wasn’t the case at all! Gowda really connects you to the characters and helps you relate in some way or another, whether you’re far from home, a working mom, trying to make your way in life, trying to have a child, or trying to make a difference.

Now, Gowda writes each chapter in either the eyes of Somer, the America woman, Kavita, the Indian wife, Somer’s India-born turn-American educated husband, Kavita’s husband Jasu, and the girl who brings them togetherr: Asha.

I think I enjoyed reading Kavita’s chapters of the books the most. To be a woman in India, as it appears, is an extremely difficult thing to do. If you’re not tossed aside at birth or aborted because you’re a girl, you live a life of devotion to your husband. Kavita’s story is heartbreaking, and I couldn’t help but feel so horrible for the women in India who have had to give up their child because of poverty or simply because their husbands don’t want a girl.

If you really want an eye-opening book, I recommend this one. I really couldn’t put it down!

Have you read it? What are your thoughts on it?
Is it on your “list” of books to read?

Seven Quick Takes

1. Yesterday I successfully bought and prepared enough food for our company barbecue. I don’t think I’ve ever bought that many groceries all at once EVER. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, so I deem the whole thing a success! Go me!

2. I just finished watched the original Footloose on TV. Ahh, the 1980’s! If only I was born earlier so I could truly appreciate it. Kevin Bacon is amazing. I have serious doubts on the remake though.

3. I’m more than certain that I didn’t blog about this, but in case you missed it on Twitter, my stove broke. More specifically, the glass top broke. By a salt shaker. A $1 glass salt shaker. The glass cracked from the top right all the way down to the bottom right burner. $400 to replace JUST THE GLASS! So – I went shopping and my new range arrives on Tuesday.

4. As a result of the broken stove top, cooking has been a challenge. Who knew I used it so often? No pasta, no ground beef … nothing! If anyone has some recipes that don’t involve cooking anything on the stove – PLEASE – Send them my way!

5. I’m still contemplating doing book reviews on the blog. Nothing too critical or anything like that, but I’ve been going through so many books right now that it just feels like it’s something I should do! Thoughts?

6. Kyle and I are SOOOO close to picking a house. We really don’t know what to do at this point. Wait a couple months and then make an offer or jump on the opportunity now before the house we wants goes. Decisions, decisions!

7. I saw this the other day while I was sitting at a red light. You better believe she had a toddler in the backseat and was wearing (what appeared to be) a pink Juicy Couture track suit. And apparently the back read “Crazy bitch.” As a coworker said, “Her mom must be so proud.”

Keep in mind I live in a small city, so this is a little ridiculous.

So – Recipes? Books? Playboy?! Happy Friday!
