Thought Dump Button

I don’t have too many random thoughts rattling around in my head, so this week’s TDT edition will be brief.

  • I’m in disbelief by the level of hatred and bigotry that still happens in todays day and age. Whether it’s race, religion, sexual preference … it still amazes me that there are individuals who are so unaccepting of those who are different. I’m not saying you have to agree with everything, but at least recognize that your way isn’t the only way. It’s the 21st century, people! Get with the program.

Told you it would be brief. ;) Now, you turn!

Product Review: Bioré Baking Soda

I have battled with acne since I hit puberty. Over the past 18 years or so, I’ve tried almost every remedy under the sun: drug-store brands, prescription cleansers, as-seen-on-TV systems, you name it, I’ve probably used it!

While my acne these days isn’t nearly as it bad as it was 18 years ago, I’m still prone to breakouts if I don’t wash my face on a regular basis. Throw in post-pregnancy hormone swings, and my skin is all sorts of whacky. It gets tiring, but what can you do?

Well, enter Bioré. It was like the freebie gods were looking down on me, because I was sent not one, but two different products to try and test! While my usual facial cleanser was doing an alright job I was still having the odd breakout, so I was curious to see if switching up cleansers would have any affect.

Bioré Baking Soda Pore Cleanser (L) and Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub (R).

I first gave the Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub a try as it was the most intriguing. Basically, it’s a powder scrub that’s activated by water; you pore a quarter-size amount into the palm of your hand, let it get wet, and then science happens and you have a scrub!

To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the scrub. It had an odd lemony scent and tingled more than my liking while I washed my face. Also, my face felt slimy even after rinsing the scrub off throughly with hot water. So, how well did it work? Well, for my skin, not so well. I washed with it once a day (my usual face washing regime) for just shy of a week and was broken out more than when I started using the scrub. It was a bit of a letdown and when I saw the price tag at my local big-box retail store I was surprised! Not worth the hefty price, IMO.

After that letdown, I moved onto the Baking Soda Pore Cleanser. While I was preparing myself for more less than stellar results, I’m actually pleased to say that I had better results than the scrub. The scent is pleasant, there was no irritating tingling sensation, and I was able to manage my acne better than the scrub. I’ve been using the cleanser for about three weeks and haven’t had any more breakouts to speak of. The cleanser definitely trumps the scrub!

Of course, the question of the hour is, would I be willing to switch to the Bioré Baking Soda Cleanser from my usual brand? Keeping with the whole “full honesty” policy of this review, most likely not. I don’t think the Bioré cleanser is doing a better job than my usual cleanser at keeping acne at bay, and since it’s about $1.50 more in price it’s not worth it to me.

So, final verdict? Cleanser: Okay, Scrub: Nay. Perhaps someone with a different skin type may have different results, but for my wonky skin it was just alright.

Full disclosure: I received these products for free from Influenster in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

  • After reading SO much about Fuller House, I finally decided to watch the first episode on Netflix. I’ll start off by admitting that I vaguely remember watching the show when I was younger, mostly because it was already on syndication when it finally caught my interest. That being said, I wasn’t overly impressed by the first episode. Too many “tributes” to the original series and it was just kind of cheesy. I’m going to give it a couple more episodes to see if it improves, but my hopes are not high. Sorry, superfans!
  • And to add the the whole rebooting of old TV shows, I don’t quite understand why it keeps happening. It seems like a giant cash-grab by Netflix. I’ll admit that I am looking forward to Gilmore Girls later this year, but has television become so stale that we have to recreate/continue decades-old series? There was a rumour that they’re rebooting Home Improvement, and I can already hear the gratuitous laughter the moment Al says, “I don’t think so, Tim,” or Wilson peeking over the fence. *groan* Thankfully, it was indeed just a rumour and it’s not happening.
  • I don’t understand the “Beauty Face” filter on cellphones. You can totally tell when someone uses it as it makes them look horribly airbrushed. Allow me to demonstrate:
#nofilter on left, "Beauty Face" on right

#nofilter on left, “Beauty Face” on right

I kind of look like a creepy doll, no? Also, this filter just goes to show how obsessed society has become with their appearances. We need to try harder to own who we are and not hide behind some cheesy selfie filter, because we’re not fooling anyone when we use it.

  • A certain celebrity recently posted a nude selfie on Instagram and is getting a lot of flack for it. And of course, there are people defending her, but why? If she weren’t a celebrity, would we still be high-fiving her brazen move? Keep in mind that she has two children. If a “regular” mom were to post a nudie on social media, chances are she would have little to no sympathizers. What example are we setting for our children if they grow up in a society where nonchalantly posting nude images of ourselves is acceptable behaviour? Could you imagine the playground talk? “MY mom posed nude!” “Oh yeah? Well, MY mom did a sex tape! Beat that!” Ugh. (Oh, and I’m going to go out on a limb and assume ya’ll know who I’m talking about. I’m not linking to her Instagram account or the photo because that only validates her actions further.)

Any thoughts you’d like to dump?
