2013: A Year in Review

It’s hard to believe that 2013 has come to an end already. It really is true that when you become an adult, time just flies by. I can’t say that it hasn’t been amazing though, because I couldn’t be happier with the way the past year has been. Here are my favourite moments and some post highlights from each month this year:

January
– Isla had her first ever swimming lessons and she took to the water like a fish! She graduated with flying colours and enjoyed splashing in the water with the other babies her age. She also started cutting teeth that month, which proved to be a cranky time for her.

– I battled my body issues while trying to find a swimsuit so I could take Isla to said swimming lessons. I learned that it doesn’t matter what pregnancy did to my body, because I have an amazing little girl to show for all my sacrifices.

February
– I volunteered during a Pit Bull awareness day at one of the local pet stores. I’m a proud supporter of HugABull BC, and it was a fun day filled with pittie smooches!

– I told my story of bullying for Pink Shirt Day. It’s amazing to see how much bullying still goes on in the world today, and even more so when I see parents bullying other parents when we preach to our children to be kind to one another.

– Isla started crawling and cut her 2nd tooth.

March
– Isla started to crawl, which was the beginning of nonstop chaos in my house. We also started weaning, which ended up being a lot more easier than I thought it was going to be.

April
– I found out I wouldn’t be going back to work in June, and while the news was tough, I took it as a blessing in disguise. Since becoming an overall stay-at-home mom, I’ve embraced the role and an really thankful for being able to stay at home, raise Isla and manage the household.

– My mom, Isla, and I took a weekend road trip to Vancouver for some shopping and fun! We also visited Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium and Ikea while we were there. It was a great trip and well needed.

May
– I turned 27 by having dinner with my family. Officially pushing 30, I’m really content on where my life is right now. I also celebrated my very first Mother’s Day, and Kyle, the amazing guy that he is, treated me, my mom, his mom, and Isla to brunch.

– My bestest friend got engaged and I offered her some stellar advice.

June
– Kyle and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary by dropping off Isla at my mom’s and going out for dinner, just the two of us. We had an amazing time, even though we couldn’t wait to go back and pick Isla up from my mom’s.

– The biggest event of the year happened: Isla’s 1st Birthday! We had family & friends over to help us celebrate Isla’s big day, and she was spoiled rotten. I still can’t believe how quickly times flies when you have a child; she’s constantly learning something new and showing off how smart she is to this day!

July
– I reconnected with a friend who I had lost contact with after a series of strange events. I didn’t think much would come of our visit, but it went really well and I was so happy to see her and be able to be friends again.

– Kyle and I headed to the Little Shuswap Lake for the day to visit one of his oldest friends. We absolutely love “lake life” and would love to own a lake property at some point in our lives.

– Other July summer adventures included Highland Games, sanitarium tours, chair upcycling, and petting zoo visits!

August
– August included more day trips to the lake, as well as a overnight journey to visit a friend for his birthday!

Isla started walking! She definitely took her time learning, but ever since she figured it out, she hasn’t looked back, and my life hasn’t been sane since ;)

September
– I started taking yoga classes after much thought and deliberation. I had always wanted to try it out and when a beginner class was being offered, I decided to go for it. I must say, I have really taken a liking to yoga and I enjoy just having an hour to myself to centre and refocus my thoughts. I can’t wait to start going to more classes in the new year, for sure!

– I met a long-time blogging friend, Angela, who happened to be passing through Kamloops after a family house boating vacation at a nearby lake! It was so great to finally meet her and her husband and I hope that we get to visit again one day!

– I also played a few pick up games of slo-pitch, filling in for players who couldn’t make it. It felt great to get back into some physical sports after a 2-year hiatus.

October
– My mom and I took Isla to a great pumpkin patch just outside of town to find a pumpkin and for a little fall photoshoot.

– I blogged about the great parent wars and how everything these days seems to be a competition about whose kid is better, taller, faster, whatever. I still believe in what I wrote, and I still try to remind myself that the way Isla is growing and developing is just fine.

– Kyle and I booked our November trip to Vegas!

– I started weaning Isla off of her pre-bedtime bottle, which great success. The whole process went seamlessly, much to my surprise. I’ve convinced myself that the next child is going to be a demon that fights everything, because Isla has been a rockstar.

November
– Kyle and I, along with our best friends Dave & Callie, went to Las Vegas for a weekend! Outside of everything Isla, this was by-far the highlight of my year, for sure. I honestly cannot wait to go back one day and do it all over again, because there is still so much I’d like to see and do. (I’m sure the next trip won’t be for a while though.)

– We also celebrated 11 years of dating in November. It’s still so hard to believe that we’ve been together for SO long, especially since we’ve known each other since we were about 6 years old. We didn’t do anything special, but we did take a moment to just say, “I love you.” Sometimes, that’s all you need :)

– As an early Valentine’s Day gift for next year to ourselves, we bought tickets to see Brent Butt, a hilarious Canadian comedian. We even scored 2nd row seats, so we can’t wait to go!

– We went to the annual Santa Claus Parade since Isla was big enough to actually absorb what was going on. It was a little cold, but we had fun together as a family!

December
– Isla got to see Santa and sit on his lap not once, but twice! Kyle’s work throws a kids Christmas party every year and Santa makes a stop to give gifts to all the kids, and then she also sat on his lap for the formal annual Santa photo. She did OK meeting him both times; there were no tears, but she wasn’t so sure about sitting on his lap.

– Christmas! This year Christmas was even more exciting with Isla running all over the place. She was super spoiled by everyone this year and I can’t wait for her to get older so it’s even more magical.

– Kyle, Isla and I wrapped up 2013 by watching a movie at home and heading to bed early!

I don’t know what’s in store for 2014, but I’m sure it will be filled with more wonderful moments!

Happy New Year, everyone!

2012: A Year in Review

January:
– I rung in the New Year with close friends at a local convention centre and had a really good time despite the fact that I was pregnant and couldn’t partake in the booziness of the festivities.
– My mom and I got started on repainting the future baby’s room by priming the room. I was happy to see the hideous colours go away!
– I finally decided to get contact lenses after getting sick and tired of constantly wiping the smudge marks off of my glasses.

February:
– Kyle and I found out that we were going to be having a baby girl!
– I finally decided what colours I wanted to pain the baby’s room since we knew that we were having a girl.
– I discussed whether or not I had a birth plan.
– Kind of a downer, but my grandparents came back to Canada after my grandma fell ill while in Palm Springs.

March:
– Kyle bought a new truck!
– Kyle and I adopted a dog! Campbell is a terror, but we love him nonetheless.
– My grandpa helped me finish painting the baby’s room

April:
– The saddest day of my life happened when my Grandma passed away.
– Slo-pitch season started and I was uber sad not to be able to play this season.
– I finally decided when I was going to start my maternity leave, and June 15th was going to be my last day of work for an entire year!

May:
– Kyle and I attended our first (and only) wedding of 2012 as a good work friend of his got hitched.
I celebrated my last birthday as a non-mom!
– We attended our pre-natal class and learned some good tips and tricks for labour and delivery. (Which, come to think of it, I didn’t use any of them)

June:
– We celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary.
– I started my maternity leave off right and bought an eReader! I love it and reading while Isla’s nursing is SO much easier!
– After going in and out of the hospital and doctor’s office a zillion times, I gave birth to my daughter, Isla on June 29! (Pretty much the biggest highlight of the year!) I can’t even begin to describe the amazingness that follows when you become a parent.

July:
– I adjusted to life as a new mom and after the first couple weeks, things got a little easier. We figured out Isla’s schedule and I got used to waking up twice in the night to tend to her needs, wants and desires.
– Daphne had some health issues that resulted in a trip to the vet, her having an IV with a run of antibiotics, and her just being miserable. It was scary because I had never seen her that sick, but as soon as she got on her antibiotics she quickly recovered.
– My mom threw a baby shower for Isla and I and we had a lot of fun!
– Two of my friends had babies this month!

August:
– I was asked to be a part of a TV segment on mom bloggers in Kamloops, and we shot the footage at the beginning of the month. It didn’t air until October, but it was a fun experience!
– I exposed myself (and my stretch marks) and talked about my body, post-baby.
– Isla started to sleep all night long, which resulted in some much needed rest for me and HARD BOOBS. But, the sacrifice was worth it.
– I took Isla on her first day trip to visit my aunt (who was visiting my Grandpa). It was blistering hot, but it was a lot of fun!

September:
– Isla FINALLY got to meet her Uncle Nolan! I went into labour while he was visiting at the end of June, but didn’t give birth until the day after he left. I was pretty stoked to have them finally meet, and it was a typical boy in not knowing what to do with a baby. (He still doesn’t!)
– I moved Isla to her crib and it resulted in her sleeping through the night more often and provided Kyle and I with a little more personal space and comfort. Having her in the same room as us for the first few months really helped us settle in, but it was awkward having “us” time with her in the room.
I got my KitchenAid stand mixer and I loooove it.
– I reflected a little bit on not having any friends. I’m still rather OK with it, but sometimes, I get bored and lonely.

October:
– I took a trip to the pumpkin patch and took photos of Isla amongst the pumpkins. She really seemed to enjoy herself!
– Kyle went to Las Vegas and I went shopping in Kelowna with my mom and Isla as a trade off.
– Isla rolled over for the first time!! (Linky to YouTube)
– Isla had her first Halloween!

November:
– Isla laughed until she puked. (YouTube linky)
– Kyle gave me my Christmas present SUPER early – a new MacBook Pro!
– My mom, Isla and I travelled to the hometown to help my Grandpa go through my Grandma’s belongings. It was a tough weekend, but it brought a little bit of closure.
– Kyle and I quietly celebrated 10 years of togetherness.

December:
– I reflected on all the things I am not, but pointed out what exactly I am.
– Isla had her first visit with Santa!
– We geared up for Christmas and amazingly got all of our gift purchasing done WAY ahead of schedule.

It’s been such an amazing year, full of ups and downs. I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings to us!

Happy New Year!!!

Year in Review

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012! It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. In honour of an amazing year, I present to you some of my memorable moments from the past year!

January

  • Wedding planning was in full-swing as I started my 6-month countdown, designed my invitations, and eventually found bridesmaid dresses for my girls!
  • Kyle ordered a new truck – a 2011 Ranger – and it eventually arrived a couple months later! (Although now we’re looking to get rid of it for a bigger truck with car-seat friendly backseats!)

February

  • I signed up for a gym membership again, which I ended up cancelling 6 months later.
  • I entered the smartphone world and got myself an HTC Desire Z (which I’m now cursing and can’t wait to upgrade!)
  • I took a deep breath and published a post about one of my biggest insecurities.

March

  • Kyle got a new job and it really helped to kick-start our future.
  • My wedding dress arrived and I couldn’t wait to put it on!
  • Thanks to the new Facebook timeline, it looks like I posted about everyone having babies, but that they wouldn’t be coming from me. Hmm, not so much I guess!
  • I debated whether or not I should buy a bathroom scale.

April

  • I went geocaching for the first time ever with Melissa and it was a lot of fun!
  • I started receiving wedding RSVP’s back in the mail and it was like Christmas all over again seeing who accepted and who declined.
  • Kyle gave me my birthday/wedding present a few days early – a Nikon D90! I’m still learning how to use all its amazing features.

May

  • I turned 25 and had my bachelorette/bridal shower all on the same day! What an exhausting one it was too.
  • I also entered the final month (which turned into the final days!) of wedding planning which left me beyond stressed, and I blogged about the little things that sometimes you don’t think of when it comes to wedding planning.

June

  • I got married!!! Need I say more?
  • My beloved Vancouver Canucks entered the Stanley Cup Final and sadly, lost. As a result, non-fans decided to riot, one of the most heart-breaking things I ever witnessed.
  • I started playing softball again and remembered how much I love it
  • I got a new job position at work and I loooove it! I also quit Job #2 after almost five years of it nearly killing me. Best decision I ever made.

July

  • We went out to the middle of nowhere for a friend’s wedding and I got eaten alive by mosquitoes! 27 bites on one leg alone! It was awful, but the wedding was fun.
  • Kyle and I started redoing a room in our townhouse – and it turned out fabulously!

August

  • I traveled to Prince George for my best friend’s wedding, where I was a bridesmaid. I was skeptical of going, but it turned out to be a lot of fun!
  • While in Prince George I also finally met up with one of my bloggy friends after 5 YEARS of conversing over the internet! It was way overdue!
  • I found out my mom’s lab, Tanner, aka the best dog in the world, has cancer. It was probably the worst news I heard all year.
  • I signed up for the fall season of softball and it was some of the best times ever!

September

  • I went to the Farmer’s Market for the first time in a couple years and got a great haul of local goodies!
  • Kyle and I started hunting for our second home.
  • My Tanner lost his battle with cancer. It’s still hard to think about to this day.
  • I got my hair cut and got some bangs at the same time. After a slight adjustment period, I’m still loving them!
  • Though I wouldn’t know for another couple weeks, I conceived a child!

October

  • Kyle and I made an offer on another house!
  • Although it was a password-protected post when I first posted it, I announced that I was expecting a baby in June 2012!
  • I had to live for two weeks without a stove because a $1 salt shaker fell on top of it and broke the glass. It was a difficult two weeks!

November

  • Our offer was accepted on the house we wanted, so after being in our townhouse for a little over a year, I started packing it back up again to move at the end of the month.
  • Kyle and I celebrated our last “dating” anniversary before we celebrate our first wedding anniversary in June 2012. We’ve been together for 9 years!
  • I wrote a sports story for work and it turned out pretty well for my first REAL sports story ever! It’s not even my area of expertise, so I was happy regardless.
  • Kyle and I became landlords as we rented out our townhouse.
  • We got completely moved into our new house and the unpacking commenced!

December

  • We got settled into our new house, completed it with new furniture, and decked the halls for Christmas!
  • One of my closest friends came home for the holidays and I got some much-needed “girl time.” I really need more in-town girl friends!
  • I finally “came out” and announced that Kyle and I are expecting a baby on June 25, 2012! I also blogged about whether or not we’re going to find out what we’re having.
  • I blogged about how having multiple Christmas dinners was taking its toll on me. I swear 2011 was the last year of 3+ Christmases!

So there you have it, my year in a nutshell! It’s been a crazy busy one, and with baby on the way mid-next year, it doesn’t seem like life is going to slow down anytime soon!

Wishing all my amazing blog readers the very best in 2012!!
