Weekend Update

While we had no solid plans for the weekend, it was a fairly eventful one!

On Friday we had two separate visits by some of our friends. Two of them stopped by for a quick hello while they were on their way to Calgary for the weekend, and one of them stopped by in the afternoon for a few hours. I always love surprise visits from friends, so that really made my day!

Friday morning I also re-wrote my insurance exam since I missed the passing grade last time by 6-friggin’-percent. I felt WAY better leaving the exam this time than I did last time; I don’t know if it was because my mind was more clear, or if the lady who supervised my exam was just nicer than the last, but I have a pretty good feeling about it this time.

On Friday evening Isla had a sleepover at my mom’s and Kyle and I went and watched The Expendables 3 at the theatre with some friends. The movie was horrible but we laughed the entire time because it was just that bad. When the movie got out we went out for a late dinner and caught up on life. In all, we had a super great evening despite how bad the movie was!

Saturday, however, wasn’t so great. Isla, with her sneaky ninja-like skills, somehow managed to waltz into the bathroom and grabbed the just-cooling-down-but-still-very-hot flat iron. She ended up burning three of her fingers on her right hand pretty good, so Kyle and I made a trip to the emergency room just in case. She cried the entire time, the poor girl, but we were in and out of the hospital in about 30 minutes. (A record, by the way. Usually ER trips take 2 hours or more, but I suppose when it’s a crying-in-pain 2-year old, things are kicked into high-gear.) It didn’t help that she had been up since 5:30 that morning, either. But as soon as we got home and settled down on the couch for some cartoons and much needed cuddles, she was sound asleep. (I’m sure the Advil and Tylenol the nurses gave her for the pain helped too.) And as soon as she woke up from her nap? You’d never even think she was hurt, other than the cute little “mitten” on her hand. Kyle bought her a GIANT cake pop from the bakery and she was as happy as can be.

August 23

Sunday was pretty lazy overall. I grocery shopped in the morning (how exciting), and went and played slo-pitch in the afternoon. We won our first game and lost our second, but they were good games overall! I got hit in the wrist with a line-drive I attempted to catch, so that feels pretty awesome today and I’m sure it’s going to leave a nice bruise.

Oh yeah! And I was also nominated for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! I was happy to dump a bucket of freezing cold water on my head in support of ALS. I know a few people who have had family members and close friends battle the disease, so it was an honour to raise awareness. Here’s my video:

That’s pretty much our weekend! Today I have to take Isla to see the doctor to have her dressing changed, then I think it’s going to be a trip to the store to buy dog food and maybe see if the Halloween costumes are out yet. I can’t believe that this coming weekend is Labour Day weekend already! It’s going to be hard saying goodbye to summer because this one has been SO great!

How was your weekend? What was the last movie you watched in theatre?

Weekend Update

This weekend just seemed to fly by, even though not much was going on in our household!

– Yesterday was my first evening back out on the ball field! While I subbed in for a couple games during the spring league, I decided to finally make a comeback and commit to the fall league. It’s a short season – the first games where last night and the wind-up tournament is slated for the first weekend in October – but it’s always hella fun! Other than soccer, slo-pitch is the only other organized sport that I’ve been involved with, so it feels great to playing again. (Although this morning as I write this my body is aching. I’m getting old :P )

– Saturday consisted of slothing around the house for most of the day, although Kyle was productive and did an oil change on the truck. That evening we headed to his grandparent’s place for a big family dinner; it was his grandpa’s birthday yesterday and his great aunts & uncles were also in town visiting.

– On Sunday Isla and I did a little shopping for new shoes for her! Since the weather is cooling off it’s starting to become socks & shoes weather and her shoes from the spring no longer fit. We headed to the Shoe Warehouse where Isla ran around like a crazed teenager until she finally found a pair she wanted. I’m serious – She grabbed a pink pair of Vans and when I offered a different pair for her to try on she refused and said,”DEESE ONES,” to the Vans. So there. I’m just glad they weren’t the light-up or squeaky ones.

– It’s crazy how summer seems to just instantly wind down. The past week has seen some cool and rainy weather, and the days are definitely getting shorter. In June/July I would be driving home from my Mom’s around 8:30 p.m. and the sun would be blinding me, and now it’s just about to set. Sad days. That being said, I am thankful for everything that summer has brought me this year, even if some of it has been tough. I’m glad that we were able to have a great summer as a family, filled with lots of little adventures and laughter. And while I’m sad to see it go, I cannot wait to bust out the jeans and cozy sweaters for the winter!

That’s about it!

How was your weekend?

Weekend Update

You know how sometimes you make no special plans for a long weekend then someone end up being fairly busy but still have an amazing time? Yep, that happened this weekend!

After a hell of a weekend having our carpet installed, I was looking forward to a relatively quiet long weekend. Kyle worked overtime Sunday night and Monday night, so we were just going to relax and unwind before he went to work.

Except that he wound up going golfing Friday morning, while Isla and I went to the paint store, and then we ended up having a mini pool party at his mom’s place, visiting with his aunt & uncle, and grandma, and ordering delivery pizza for dinner. While we were there, Kyle’s aunt and uncle invited us to go stand-up paddle boarding (or “SUP,” as the cool kids call it) on Saturday, so he happily accepted their offer. (Kyle remembered that I had mentioned wanting to try it.)

So Saturday morning, Kyle, Isla, his mom, aunt & uncle, and I piled into our truck and we headed out to the nicest little lake just outside of Kamloops. It’s amazing – I didn’t even know it existed but it was packed with campers for the long weekend! Plus, it was so quiet and calm, and the water was perfect for swimming. A bonus for paddle boarding was that there was a speed restriction on the lake, so there were no crazy-fast speed boats whipping around and creating huge wakes, something that a lot of the more popular lakes in the area have way too many of.

“SUP” was so much fun!! Kyle’s aunt & uncle have inflatable boards, but you’d never guess it while you’re on them. I turned out to be a bit of a natural and absolutely loved being out on the water, paddling around. I can definitely see me owning a paddle board one of these days, for sure. Kyle’s aunt dared me to try and do a yoga pose on the board after she had mentioned that some people have good enough balance to do it, so I happily accepted the challenge. I think I did okay: ;)

Isla also had a blast hanging out on shore, digging in the dirt and splashing in the water. While she had one tiny meltdown on the way in, she is such a good little adventurer most of the time and I’m glad she had fun!

On Sunday I browsed the mall with my mom and bought NOTHING, except a shirt for Isla because she got her smoothie all over her white-striped shirt. (Oops.) It was Kyle’s first nightshift since February, so that night I ended up watching a movie by myself (Anchorman 2) after Isla went to bed.

Yesterday Isla and I headed back down to my mom’s for the day so that Kyle could sleep for his 2nd nightshift. We had grand plans of pickling beets, but changed our minds when we realized we had to process the beets and don’t have a canner. Womp womp. We ended up just hanging out, taking Isla for a little walk (or a BIG walk in her mind), raiding the garden for fresh beans & carrots, playing in the sprinkler, and “swimming” in the hot tub. Really, nothing super exciting, but a wonderful, laid-back day.

Now it’s Tuesday and life is winding back to its regular routine. While we have a couple of plans for this month, this past weekend has reminded me that we need to just step back and let life plan itself for us. July was just way too busy for me in every aspect imaginable and I want to just enjoy August as it comes at me. I think I’m off to a pretty good start. I’m thinking this month will eventually see me return to the slo-pitch field on Sundays, and on Thursday I’m headed to an outdoor yoga class, which I’m SUPER looking forward to. (I haven’t been to an actual class in over a month, and have only practised at home once. SHAME ON ME!) I just need less stress, and I think by being more carefree is going to really help me mentally.

How was your weekend? (Did you have a long weekend too?)
