Pet Whisperer

Last week, I had the pleasure of cat-sitting my favourite step-cats for Melissa. She went away to her home island for the week, so I made sure my favourite friendly kitties were fed and taken care of!

Day one included me discovering the door to her basement suite was open. Not cool! Luckily the cats were both inside and in one piece. Whew! After that I made a lovely sign for the door to make sure the door stayed closed. (Her landlord has the place up for sale and realtors have been in and out). The sign, in my opinion is awesome:

Nothing says you mean business like electrical tape, right? Right! Anyway, so the door was always shut and the cats never escaped, leaving me with not having to come up with excuses that the cats were long gone. (“Yeah, they were taken hostage by the ambassadors of the zombie apocalypse … Sorry?”)

Anyway, the cats loved me, more or less. Atticus loved me the first day I arrived and my last day of cat-sitting, which didn’t surprise me but it’s a step up from the last time I cat-sit. Thomas, on the other hand, loves me (or probably most people) and was at my feet every second, rubbing against my legs and making my dogs jealous!

Sir Thomas, the loving, regal one

Atticus, the “I’ll love you when I feel like it” one

I also fed my mom’s animals on Saturday since my step-bro had to work late and the dogs and cat are programmed to eat at the same time every day! (Our parents went to Palm Springs for a week – Lucky!)

They were excited to see me (as always!) but I wasn’t sure if it was actually for me or just because they were hungry. Not that it matters; I love my Tanner, so it was good to see him <3 It’s cute how they all lined up in a row to eat:

Tanner, Squirt and Mickey

Anyway, since I didn’t let any of the animals escape, go hungry or have them accidentally lock themselves in a room to pee on everything (Yeah, it happened once), I say I’m a darn-good pet sitter! I much prefer it to babysitting, that’s for sure!

So, which do you prefer, pets or kids?

Week(end) update

So I messed up the dates when scheduling my blog posts, so I’m sure that some of you have already read MOST of this one. But there’s more! Read on, dear bloggers, read on ...

Yeah, so I lacked slightly on my weekend update on Sunday. I didn’t work the entire weekend obviously, but it felt like it!

Anyway, Friday I discovered that one of my best friends (we’ll call her “Reba”) was coming down south for a few days because her fiancée wanted to look for a “new-to-him” truck. Plus and her mom lives about two hours away from Kamloops so Reba wanted to see her before her baby came! (BTW – It seems like there’s a lot of baby talk going around the blogosphere!) She’s due in about four weeks too, so it was amazing to see her belly. The baby was sleeping or something, so I didn’t get to feel it kick, but it put a smile on my face just knowing that there’s a little person inside her. (Or the Alien, as we like to refer to it as!) She’s the person I plan on going to Fort Saint John to visit in the spring. :)

All my other friends are the same height as me, so I look so short next to her!

My only thoughts on Valentine’s Day was that it was uneventful, and I’m okay with it! Kyle gave me my present early – a trip to the spa! I went yesterday and it was absolutely amazing! When I got there I had a little cup of ginseng honey tea and was whisked away to the “Fire” room, which basically had warm, reddish tones. I got a lavender steam, a body scrub and an amazing massage. Lovely!  Afterwards I got to have some yummy fruit tea, cookies and rice crackers. It was the perfect gift and one of the most thoughtful Kyle has got me! I’d love to go back!

My delicious fruit tea, with a green tea cookie and rice cracker snacks!

Monday I had a Chinese New Year’s feast with my dad, brother and Kyle. It was delicious! Usually I’m hungry about a half-hour after I eat Asian food (because of all the starch) but I was full for almost the entire night! My fortune cookie fortune was pretty awesome too:

I like to think I am, so this fortune was pretty awesome. And no, I didn’t add “in bed” to the end. ;)

Happy Thursday!

For those who don’t know, I’m half Chinese. I get a lot of looks from people trying to figure out “what I’m made of” and when I tell them, the usually reply “Oh, I can see it now.” My younger cousins, who are younger than me, look way more Asian than I do. Anyway, this is all beside the point.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year, more specifically, the year of the Tiger, a.k.a. MY year! (Or anyone else who was born in 1986. I guess I’ll share.) I’m quite proud of my Chinese heritage. My great-grandfather came over to Canada with his family (my grandfather) and they settled in my hometown, starting up a general store and making an impact. (There’s a photo of my great-grandpa, grandpa and great-uncle in the local museum). My dad is a first-generation Canadian and tries to keep our Chinese heritage alive.

When I was born, my grandparents (who had since moved from my hometown to Vancouver) wanted to help raise me. My mom didn’t like the idea of me being away I suppose, so I never got to. I really wish I could speak Chinese, like really really wish. I know I could take language courses at the university, but sometimes, I wish I knew it naturally.

One day, when the Vancouver Olympics aren’t going on at the same time as Chinese New Year’s, I’d like to go down to Vancouver and take in the sights. The last time I was there was in 2007, but we had to leave the day of the parade so we never watched it. I did get some photos in Chinatown, like this Fu Dog outside a store:

Anyway, I hope every appreciates their family’s history and where they came from. It makes us who we are and will always be a part of us. Gung Hay Fat Choy! (Happy New Year!)

Now tell me, do you add “In bed” to the end of YOUR fortune cookie fortune?
