Christmas Coma

First – I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas this past weekend!

My Christmas celebrations are still going on! Tonight Kyle and I are headed to his mom’s for (another) turkey dinner with his mom, her boyfriend, Kyle’s sister (I think), and his aunt and uncle. It’s always fun time with lots of laughter, so I’m looking forward to it! I’m also making a delicious spinach dip to devour share with everyone.

The thing is, while I love spending time with family during the holidays, by the end of it all, it’s too much and both Kyle and I are exhausted. Because both of our parents are split up, more often than not we end up having four Christmases, and sometimes they are just as traumatic as the movie.

Of course, we’re not exactly keen on flying to some tropical paradise every time Christmas rolls around, so we try and schedule everyone’s dinners on different nights so no one is left out. It’s hard. We said last year that it was going to be the last year of four Christmases, but this year, we have three of them. By tonight, I’m sure I’m going to slip into a coma.

This year, I swear, is the last year we’re going to everyone’s house for Christmas. This time next year, we’ll have a 6-month old (which is so surreal to say!) and I just don’t think I’ll feel up to packing up the kiddo and going out every night around Christmas. If people want to visit me and the baby, they can come to my house!

That being said – I still don’t know what we’ll do as far as creating our own traditions. We’ve yet to host a holiday dinner (I’ve never cooked anything bigger than a roast) and with  all the men in the family working shift work, it’s hard to coordinate everyone. (Kyle, my dad, my step-dad, and Kyle’s mom’s boyfriend all work at the same place but they’re all on different 4×4 shifts!) As of right now, Kyle works Christmas night, so it doesn’t look like Christmas dinner will be at our house next year anyway!

I think in a couple years we’ll start making our own traditions. The baby won’t be old enough to realize what’s going on next Christmas, and maybe in a couple years Kyle will be working on a different shift, or will have enough seniority to get Christmas Day off. We’ll see! I know it seems like such a long time into the future, but time only seems to go faster these days.

Questions:
Have you started any traditions with your significant other?
How do you find balance during the holidays?

A Christmas Q&A

I’ve seen this circulating around the blogosphere and figured I’d make today’s post into the “obligatory” Christmas post!
1. egg nog or hot chocolate?
I used to like egg nog, but I’m more partial to hot chocolate these days! Hot white chocolate is even better!
2. does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
My Santa doesn’t slack off – he wraps his presents! Where’s the surprise otherwise!?
3. multi-colored or white lights on tree/house?
Multi-coloured all the way. Right now we just have them on our tree – next year we’ll put lights up outside.
4. do you hang mistletoe?
We had a fake sprig of it when I was little but I have no idea what happened to it. I find mistletoe to be rather awkward.
5. when do you put up decorations?
I like to try and get my decorations out of storage by the beginning of December, and I usually decorate the first weekend of December.
6. what is your favorite holiday dish?
Definitely the stuffing. My mom’s stuffing, to be specific.
7. favorite holiday memory as a child.
I always loved waking up to see that Santa had eaten all the cookies and drank the milk I left out for him, and that the reindeer had eaten the carrots I left for them. Although now I’m more than certain that my parents may have helped ;)
8. when did you learn the truth about Santa?
The class bully told me he wasn’t real. He’s still a jerk to this day!
9. do you open a gift on Christmas eve?
When I was little we always opened a present from my grandparents which was ALWAYS Christmas pajamas. We don’t open gifts on Christmas Eve anymore though, unless we’re celebrating with family that day. With four Christmases, it’s bound to happen!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
With lights, garland, beads and ornaments of all shapes, weights and sizes! I always have to find a sturdy tree because some of my ornaments are really heavy!
11. Snow! Love it or dread it?
I would say I’m tolerant of it. Since I live in a relatively snowy area of Canada (no – not all of Canada gets a lot of snow!) you learn to deal with it. I do love watching it fall though!
12. Can you ice skate?
I haven’t in ages, but I’m sure if I put a pair of skates on I could figure it out again. It’s like riding a bike, right? Once you learn once you know forever?
13. Do you remember your favourite gift?
I think when I got my very first cellphone I was pretty excited. Other than that, I can’t remember!
14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?
Being with family and the ones I love.
15. What is your favourite holiday dessert?
Definitely cheesecake!
16. what is your favourite holiday tradition?
Driving around and looking at all the Christmas lights, and watching Christmas movies all night long.

17. what tops your tree?

An angel.
18. which do you prefer: giving or receiving?
I like both! I love watching people open the gifts I give them and who doesn’t like receiving a little something in return :)
19. candy canes. yucky or yummy?
I’m not a huge fan actually.
20. favorite Christmas show?
A Muppet Family Christmas and now – Die Hard :)
21. saddest Christmas song?
I’ve always found “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to be super depressing.
22. favorite Christmas song?
Baby It’s Cold Outside!
So Happy Holidays to all my amazing blog readers! I hope Christmas sees you well and merry!

Obligatory “Thankful for” List

It’s Thanksgiving Monday today in Canada, which means most of us Canadians are probably still suffering from a tryptophan coma. While the actual holiday is today, the majority of people have their family dinners on Sunday. Not in my case! I’m heading up to my dad’s for lunch and then going to my mom’s for dinner. Sadly, Kyle has to work, but he can expect a giant plate of leftovers! Lucky man :)

And now, for the obligatory “Thankful for” list:

This year I’m thankful for…

… not having to cook turkey dinner today, because the glass of my flat-top stove is broken.

… living in a relatively spider-free house (the interior anyway).

… having a happy, healthy, and even mildly “simple”, dog.

… my amazing husband who sticks his hands in possibly spider infested tomato plants to get me ripe tomatoes.

… our Realtor who’s all about finding the perfect new home for us.

… my mom, for being an amazing woman.

… my dad, who’s always there with a jar of homemade soup.

… my family in general, for showing so much love towards Kyle and I on our wedding day.

… my friends, for understanding who I am and accepting it.

What are you thankful for? (Even if it’s not your Thanksgiving weekend!)
