Kicking the Sumo Diet

Sometime last summer, I can’t pin-point a date exactly, I decided to get healthier. I bucked up and joined a gym and decided to watch what I eat more carefully.

I’m not talking about calorie counting, but just eating food less often. I found that during university, I’d graze throughout the day all while still eating breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday, plus a giant bedtime “snack.” (Think lunch-size leftovers, frozen dinners, etc.) I now like to call that my Sumo Wrestler Diet, because after eating huge meals, sumo wrestlers have naps. Apparently that’s how they kept all that weight on.

Add my Sumo Diet to my new lack of exercise due to no longer playing soccer, I suppose I wasn’t burning all those glorious calories I was so happily consuming. After five years of post-secondary education and studying at night while eating garbage food, it added up. I think I gained around 10 pounds, which seemed to gather in my stomach area.

After staring at my gut in the mirror one day, I finally had enough and decided I needed to change my habits. I joined the gym and try to go two or three times a week, doing cardio once or twice and weight-training once a week. I (almost completely) stopped eating huge amounts of food between dinner and bedtime. I’ll have an orange, some yogurt or a small bowl of cereal instead. It takes a whole hell of a lot of willpower, but I do it! Right now, as I write this post, I’m really craving tortilla chips with salsa and loads of sour cream, but I’m resisting! I have a wonderful sample of Kashi cereal I’m going to try instead :)

I still eat all the foods I love in the same portion sizes I’ve always had if I just adjusted everything else I did. I’m proud of my accomplishments and I’ve noticed that I have more energy these days. I can take my dogs for a walk and not die at the top of a hill. I just feel good. I don’t weigh the same as I did in high school, I don’t think I ever will, but just feeling better about myself is all that matters.

Ten on Tuesday

Here’s another edition of Ten on Tuesday, brought to you by Roots and Rings!

1. If you were given an hour to use a $200 Amazon gift card, what would you buy?

Books, of course! I’d stock up on novels I’ve been wanting to buy, and maybe kids’ books for the future. (No, I’m not expecting!)

2. Are there any fairly common foods that you’ve never had?

Indian cuisine! However, this shall be remedied on Thursday when I have din-din with Melissa. (Expect Friday Food Adventures this week!)

3. What was your favourite way to use your imagination as a kid?

I loooooved to play with Lego and Tinker Toys.

4. What’s your favourite state? Why?

California – because that’s where the oranges in my OJ come from … :P To be honest, I don’t have a favourite state! I’m not even from the States!

5. If it was our culture to have our parents choose our spouses, do you think yours would make a good choice?

I would hope so, but it’s hard to say for sure. I could see my mom picking someone clean-cut (an accountant maybe?) and my dad picking someone out of the box.

6. What’s your favourite herb?

Dill! Loooove it. Or is garlic an herb? Because I love that one too.

7. If you could have dinner with one celebrity, who would you choose?

Jason Statham, so I could stare at him from across the table. Mmmm …

8. What’s your favourite Disney movie?

My #1 pick is 101 Dalmatians and my #2 pick is The Little Mermaid, followed by The Lion King.

9. If you had to listen to the same song over and over for 24 hours, what song would you choose?

Right now, I think it would have to be k.d. Lang’s version of Hallelujah. She did such a beautiful job during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, it’s been stuck in my head ever since!

10. How do you order your steak?

Medium-rare! Mmm …

This is me in March …

This month….

I like: that I’ve learned how to say “No” to my other job when I’m feeling exhausted.

I don’t like: that my grandparents are still Snowbirding.

I want you to know: I’m beyond excited for me and Kyle’s trip to Vancouver on the 20th.

I’ve planned: A trip to Vancouver, a night out with GSP and hopefully a visit with the grandparents when they return.

I want to say to someone special: I miss our coffee dates and chats. Could you please just text me back for once?
