On Death

Death is a funny thing. Not necessarily funny in a “Ha ha” kind of way, but funny in the way it approaches you.

You grow up knowing that you’re getting older. How can we not? As soon as we’re old enough to count backwards we’re counting down the days until we’re one year older. Eventually, those countdowns stop, but at what point is different for every person. It was only a couple years ago when I personally stopped caring about how old I was soon going to be.

I have found that there comes a point where you stop counting down to how old you’re going to be and start adding up how many days you’ve had to enjoy life. It may sound a little morbid, but for me, it was when my Grandma passed away a month ago. It was sudden, it was hard, and it still is.

We were told that she had 3 to 6 months to live, but she only lived for about 2 more weeks past that prognosis. See, you can countdown as much as you like, but sometimes life has a funny way of throwing a wrench into things.

Sometimes I forget that people, animals, myself … You only get older. I’m struggling with the acceptance of this, especially since my mom had to put our dog down because of cancer in the fall. I always forget that when you have a pet, chances are that they’re going to die before you do. When Tanner passed in the fall, it was the first time I had really felt grief. Before that, it was when my great-grandma passed away a few years ago, but it never hit me as hard.

But now, with Daphne starting to show signs of her progressing age, it’s getting tough again. I’m constantly worried that I’m going to wake up one morning and she won’t be able to move at all, and I’ll have to say goodbye once again to something I love so much.

Saying goodbye because of death is the hardest thing I think anyone has to do. You can’t avoid death, and you can’t countdown to it. Death works in its own, mysterious ways. I choose not to think that death and the way we die is part of some higher being’s plan. I don’t believe it should be in anyone’s plan to make people’s emotions ache and hurt so badly.

For me, I’ve learned that it’s okay to hate death, but I have to remember that its inevitable. You can’t avoid it, but when it comes, it’s okay to be sad, mad, and angry at it. I don’t know when I’ll fully heal and accept that death has taken those I loved away from me, but with each day, it gets a little easier to cope with.

I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by a supportive family that understands that it’s hard for me to deal with it some days, and when I bust out into tears they don’t judge me, but just love me.

One day I’ll learn not to hate death so much, and to accept it as part of the natural way of life. For now, I’m just going to try to understand it.

How do you deal or cope with death?

Sorry for the somewhat dark nature of this post, but it’s just been on my mind for a while and I needed to get it out.

Ten on Tuesday

1. What TV commercial do you think is the most annoying?
Oooh, there’s a bunch of them! The Free Credit Report.com ones are super annoying, and the new Old Spice ones are annoying too. (Please bring back the original Old Spice Man!)

2. What is the weirdest gift you have ever received?
That’s a good question. Kyle and I received a Bible as a wedding gift, which we thought was odd because we’re not religious whatsoever. Maybe one day we’ll give it a read, only to be more more educated on what it says.

3. What is a song you thought you knew the words and then later found out you were wrong?
“Drive By” by Train. I argued with my mom about the lyrics and she was right. Damn!

4. What are you most looking forward to this month?
Well, my birthday is next week, and Kyle and I are going to a wedding this weekend. Other than that, it’s just the countdown to my due date!

5. What is your favourite kitchen appliance? Explain.
My dishwasher. You have no idea how much I love it.

6. If you could have a gift card to anywhere right now, where would you choose? Why?
The maternity store, because I desperately need more maternity clothes!

7. What are your favourite pizza toppings?
In no particular order: mushrooms, kalamata olives, feta cheese and fresh tomatoes.

8. Name something you’re thankful for aside from obvious answers (i.e. family, job, faith, etc.).
Living in Canada. Sure, we do things a little differently up here, but I wouldn’t live anywhere else!

9. What was your least favourite rule growing up?
Making my bed. I don’t know if that’s considered more of a chore than a rule, but either way, I hated making my bed. Hell, I still don’t make my bed!

10. If you could train your pet to do one thing, what would it be? Example, “Weego” from the Bud Light commercial:
For now, I’d just like him to stop peeing in the house. Once we master that, if I could train him to change diapers once the baby comes, that would be awesome! (I’m using Campbell for this since Daphne is old and like they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, lol)

32 Weeks

How far along? 32 Weeks!

How big is baby? About 3.75lbs and 17″ long, according to BabyCentre.ca.

Total weight gain/loss: I haven’t gained anything significant in the past week. (Yay?)

Maternity Clothes? I’m in desperate need of summer clothing still! Also, I’m thinking it’s time to buy nursing bras, or at least comfortable bras. I’m not 100% sure, but I’m thinking the underwire in my regular bra is rubbing my skin funny because of my baby bump. It’s extremely uncomfortable and now the first thing I do when I get home from work/wherever is take my bra off. I’d rather not be a hippie.

Stretch marks? None! I still think Kyle is full of it when he says he sees stretchmarks.

Sleep: It comes and goes …

Movement: Still lots! As it turns out, what I thought was the baby just pressing her bum out in the air is actually Braxton Hicks contractions (or Briggs and Stratton, as Kyle likes to call them). They are quite uncomfortable, but at least I know that’s what’s going on.

Food cravings: Nothing out of the ordinary.

What I miss: Sleeping comfortably. I miss it sooooo much.

What I am looking forward to: My glider and ottoman should be arriving this week! I’m pretty excited about it!

Milestones: Kyle starting putting the closet doors and shelving back into the baby’s room last week, so we’re hoping to get that done this week. I also decided which diapering option I’m going to go with finally. I’ll probably post about this in the future!
