{Day in the Life} 08/17/15

4 am: Norah wakes up and wants to nurse, so I turn off the baby monitor and head to her room to feed her. After a burp and a diaper change, I’m back in bed by 4:45 and don’t even hear Kyle get up for work at 5:20. He kisses me goodbye around 5:45 and I fall back to sleep.

7 am: Norah squalks a little bit over the baby monitor, so I decide to get up and see if I can wolf down some cereal before she really starts fussing. I pour myself some coffee and am about to pour some cereal when Isla wakes up, so my attention diverts to her. I get her some cereal, wolf my own down, and by 7:30 Norah is getting pretty upset that I haven’t come to feed her. Isla finished her breakfast as well, so I get her settled with some cartoons and head to Norah’s room to feed her.

8:20 am: Norah finishes eating and has fallen back to sleep, so I finish my coffee and hop into the shower.

9 am: I’m done showering and by 9:30 Isla and I are both dressed and ready for the day. A few minutes later, Norah wakes up, so I get her changed and dressed for the day.

10 am: We head out to the toy store! My aunt had sent both of the girls gift cars for Toys R Us, with instructions to go and let Isla pick something out for herself and her little sister. Isla had a blast pushing the little shopping card up and down all the aisles and picking something out for herself and Norah. I think she only got distracted a handful of times ;) Isla picked out a MagnaDoodle and some pencil crayons for herself, and a tummy time pillow and a new soother leash for Norah.

11 am: We’re finally done at the toy store, so we head home as Norah’s due to eat any time. I manage to take the above photo and unbox all of the toys before Norah really starts chirping me to eat.

12:30 pm: After a few distractions, Norah is finished nursing and I get lunch heated up for Isla and wonder what I’m going to make myself.

1:30 pm: I finally settle on just some leftover pasta from Saturday and Greek salad dressing for lunch. I toss some fresh tomatoes into my bowl to make it seem healthier. I put together some barbecue sauce on the stove for dinner later since it seems like I have a moment to myself. I plunk myself on the couch to watch some Incredible Dr. Pol and America’s Next Top Model (don’t judge!) while holding Norah and eating at the same time because Motherhood = Multitasking ;)

4:30 pm: It’s time for Norah to eat (again!) so I assume the position on the couch again. She eats and spits up all over me and the couch. Fun!

5:30 pm: I get dinner started. Tonight it’s sausages, pasta and broccoli! Not gourmet, but not out of a box either, with the exception of the pasta sauce. At least it’s all natural? Kyle texts me letting me know he’s on his way home from work, and I text back and forth with him while making dinner and keeping Isla from pestering her sister.

6:15 pm: Kyle’s home from work. Dinner is done right as the barbecue runs out of propane. Whew! I manage to get Norah down for a little nap and I’m able to eat dinner before she wakes up.

7 pm: Norah wakes up from her cat nap and I want to give her a bath, so I take her to her room to get ready. While I’m in there, I hear a crash and shatter in the kitchen, and Isla had somehow (she wouldn’t tell us how) knocked a glass onto the floor. Luckily Kyle had just came back into the house after mowing the front lawn, so he steps in to clean up the glass while I bathe Norah.

7:30 pm: Norah’s all done her bath and in her pajamas and is starting to get hungry, but she seems content enough with her soother and rocking in the glider. Kyle got Isla ready for bed, so soon she comes to say goodnight and Kyle reads her her bedtime story. (The Very Hungry Zombie, haha.) I chat with my mom on the phone for a bit until Norah starts to really get fussy around 8:15, so I feed her and start to get her settled for bed.

9:30 pm: Norah took her sweet time falling asleep, but she’s finally down for the count so I join Kyle in the living room and watch some TV with him for a bit before it’s time to head to bed. I realized I didn’t finished up with this post, so I decide to do it in the morning, if/when I have some free time ;)

10 pm: Bedtime!

How was your Monday?? Mine sounds pretty boring, really, now that I reread this post …

{Day in the Life} 01/22/15

5:40 am: Kyle leaves for work and I roll over for 20 more minutes of eyes-closed time before my alarm goes off. It’s his “Friday” and I’m a little jealous.

6 am: My alarm goes off, but I hit swipe the snooze button and lay in bed for 10 more minutes.

6:10 am: My alarm goes off again, and I peel myself out from underneath the covers, climb over my Snoogle and hop in the shower.

6:50 am: I let the dogs outside and hope they stay quiet so Isla can sleep a little longer. Generally, if she wakes up any earlier than 7am it’s going to be a loooong day for her. I pour myself a bowl of cereal and get Isla’s breakfast ready for her when she wakes up.

7:10 am: Isla wakes up so I sit her on the potty, then get her breakfast made (an Eggo waffle with peanut butter & jam, a clementine, and milk). I finish my cereal and get Isla’s clothes ready and pull meat out to defrost for dinner while she’s finishing her breakfast. I also throw a quick lunch together for myself to take to work, and feed the dogs.

7:30 am: Isla declares she’s done her breakfast, so I get her out of her booster seat and get force her into the bathroom to brush her teeth and hair. This morning she’s being more difficult than usual, but I manage to get her teeth brushed, as well as her hair after a slight hissy fit. (She HATES having her hair brushed but I can usually quickly run a brush through without incident it if she’s distracted.) After that I get her dressed.

7:45 am: I let the dogs out to go to the bathroom before I head out the door. While they’re out doing their thing, I make my coffee and make sure my lunch is all ready to go.

7:55 am: I let the dogs in and close the curtains on the front window so Campbell stays off the couch, and then tell Isla it’s time to go. She’s on an “I DO IT” kick right now, and she insists on walking down the stairs while holding onto the handrail. It takes forever, but she eventually gets down the stairs and I get her loaded into the car.

8:10 am: I drop Isla off at my MIL’s for the day. I’m pretty fortunate that she “signed up” to watch Isla during the day while I’m working for a few weeks, and Isla is a lucky girl to get to spend the day at Grandma’s House.

8:20 am: I arrive at work and get to my office. I tuck my lunch away in the fridge in the lunchroom and fire on my computer. It did an update yesterday when I left, so it takes FOREVER to boot up this morning. When it finally does I check my emails – nothing! Life is grand when you’re an auxiliary worker.

My office. Of course that's Isla as my desktop background ;)

9:00 am: I’m waiting for edits to come back on a project I’m working on, so I make a few notes for one I’ll be starting next week.

9:30(ish) am: I notice a bunch of people/students filing out of the adjacent building and I wonder what the heck is going on. Fire alarm? Who knows. I don’t think much of it, except to take a picture because, WEIRD.

20150122_092148[1]

9:45(ish) am: The fire alarm starts going off in our building and scares the crap out of me. Apparently everyone was informed of the drill/test, but the email was sent two months ago so I obviously missed it. I’m pretty sure I haven’t been involved in a fire drill since high school, so I just follow everyone else outside and wait. Eventually we’re allowed back in the building.

10 – 11:30 am: I do some more research for the project I’m working on, but am not finding anything overly helpful. We’re (myself and other person in the department) are waiting for someone in the department the project is focused on to be available to chat with, so as it turns out, we won’t be moving forward until next week.

12 – 1 pm: LUNCHTIME! I’m generally pretty hungry by the time my lunch break rolls around, even though I have a mid-morning snack around 10. (It was grapes today.) I’m certain I’ve hit the, “MUST EAT EVERYTHING” stage of pregnancy, because I feel like I’m always hungry. Anyway, I walked across campus to have lunch with some friends who work in various departments at the university. It was so nice and sunny outside! On my way back to my office I stopped and said “Hello” to the therapy dogs; they visit the campus every Thursday for pets and cuddles and to help boost people’s spirits. (It works! Dogs melt my heart )

1 pm: I’m back in the office and already craving junk food. Clearly a salad, yogurt and a clementine was not enough. There’s another clementine sitting on my desk but all I really want is a bag of Miss Vicki’s Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar chips from the vending machine. It looks like I probably have enough change in my wallet to buy a bag, but self control gets the better of me. It’s hard to be healthy, yo. (Especially since I devoured some Cheezies yesterday afternoon.)

1:15 pm: I start some brainstorming for images and infographic ideas for the project I’m working on.

3:10 pm: Caved.

3:45 pm: My boss stops by my office and asks what I’m working on, and I had just finished my brainstorming. I let her know and she said we’ll get together for a meeting with our web developer and a web designer to see what we can come up with.

4:30 pm: I’m done work for the day, so I shut down my computer, lock up my office, and go pick up Isla from my MIL’s. She had a fun day of dancing, swimming, and Play-Dohing, but she’s super tired from not napping at all and so I spend the drive home obnoxiously singing Taylor Swift trying to keep her awake. It works, but she’s not happy about it.

5:20 pm: I start making dinner. Nothing too terribly special, just Shake & Bake pork chops, a Lipton Sidekick pasta mix and some steamed carrots.

6:20 pm: Kyle arrives home from work, so we all sit down for dinner. I realize that I forgot to add butter to the pasta, thus why it tastes off. Oops. After dinner we relax and digest for a bit before I toss Isla in the bathtub.

7:30 pm: Isla’s in the bath so I call my mom to see if she can still watch Isla on Saturday. We start to whine to one another about our various aching body parts, and figure we should probably stop and save it all for our trip to Vancouver at the end of March.

7:50 pm: Isla’s all done in the bath, so I get her PJ’s on and dry her hair. After that she goes and gives Kyle a hug and a kiss goodnight and chooses a book for bedtime. Tonight it’s “That’s Not My Puppy,” which is great because it’s short and easy to read.

8:10 pm: Isla’s tucked away in bed, so Kyle and I park our rears on the couch for some “quality” television. We end up watching the end of Braveheart and the beginning of Tombstone.

10 pm: It’s bedtime for me because I have to get up and go to work in the morning. Kyle thought pretty hard about staying up and watching Tombstone (it was on until midnight), but since he’s watching Isla while I’m at work, he figured it would be better if he came to bed too so he’s not too tired and can keep up with our little hurricane!

That pretty much sums up my Thursday! Pretty exciting stuff, no? ;)

What are some highlights from your day on Thursday?

A Day in the Life

I haven’t done a Day in the Life post since last October, so I thought another one was in order since again, SO much has changed since last year! It was fun to read that post and see how much Isla’s schedule has changed.

So here’s the Day in the Life of your’s truly for Tuesday, November 5:

7:00 a.m.
My alarm goes off and I ignore it. I’ve been trying to wake up before Isla so I can enjoy my breakfast and coffee in peace, or at least in as much peace as the dogs will allow it (Whiney little buggers). Then I remember that it’s garbage day, so after 10 minutes of laying there I peel myself out of bed so I can drag the cans to the curb.

7:15 a.m.
I hear Isla starting to wake up. Time to eat my breakfast as fast as I can. At least the coffee is ready.

7:50 a.m.
I get Isla up out of bed. She’s loves to just lay there in her crib and chat to me before letting actually pick her up so I can change her diaper. After she’s changed, I get her breakfast going – raisin toast and raspberries (her favourite fruit by far). I also feed the dogs, who have been giving me “the eyes” since I woke up. While everyone eats I read blogs and drink my coffee.

Breakfast of champs! Also note that Campbell knows where food comes from and can always be found at Isla's side during her meals.

8:10 a.m.
Isla is finished her breakfast, so we go and watch the news and wait for Daddy to come home from work.

8:40 a.m.
Kyle’s home from work, tired, but home! Isla tells him about her evening.

10 a.m.
I put Isla down for a nap, and Kyle and I hop in the shower. At 10:30, she’s still awake, but falls asleep. I use the time to groom Daphne – She desperately needs her nails to be cut and her fur brushed. After about 45 minutes, I’m done, and Daph is beautiful. I’ll probably have to brush her one more time since she was starting to get a little bitchy at the end.

11:45 a.m.
Isla is starting to wake up from her nap, so I get her lunch together. Pasta and oranges! I swear this kid loves food a little too much. By noon she’s up and dressed, and we sit down and have lunch together. (Pasta for me as well, but a microwave meal – don’t judge.)

2:30 p.m.
After lounging around on the couch after lunch, I put Isla down to see if she’ll have an afternoon nap. She was acting a little grumpy for no apparent reason, so a little “alone” time for her wasn’t going to hurt. After I put her down, I gave Campbell a bath. Ugh. He jumped out of the bathtub only once, which is a win in my books. Now he’s smelling pretty!

3:30 p.m.
Isla still hasn’t fallen asleep, so I go in her room, change her diaper and “remind” her that it’s time for a nap. Instead of falling asleep, she throws a fit, so it looks like there’s no afternoon nap today.

4:15 p.m.
Kyle volunteers to make dinner, which is music to my ears. It’s ready just after 5 p.m., so we all eat together.

6 p.m.
We’re done dinner and the dishes – just in time to turn on the hockey game!

8 p.m.
The effects of no afternoon nap are starting to show their symptoms and Isla is started to get particularly grumpy. We begin our bedtime routine: brushing teeth, putting on PJ’s, having a sip of water, reading a book, and into bed. She fell asleep while I was reading “The Places You’ll Go,” but I finished it anyway and put her down into her crib.

8:20 p.m.
Isla’s in bed, and I can now join Kyle on the couch for the rest of the hockey game. The Canucks ended up losing in a shoot out. Oh well.

9 p.m.
Kyle’s ready for bed since he hasn’t slept since the day before. (Night shift really knows how to mess with you.) Instead of going to bed, he 1/2 watches Monday’s episode of The Voice with me. I actually skipped through a couple of the performances because they were HORRIBLE. My favourites so far? Cole on Team Blake and James on Team Adam. I’ve yet to watch Tuesday’s episode, so I won’t decide on Christina or Cee Lo’s teams quite yet.

10:20 p.m.
Thanks to the wonderful invention of the PVR, I’m done watching The Voice and we decide to go to bed. I tuck Isla in and call it a night!

I would say that’s a pretty average day for us, minus the dog grooming part!

What does an average day in your life look like?
