19 Weeks and Keeping it Under Wraps

Baby names: They can be a touchy subject.

Sometimes, family members want you to keep a tradition going, like using a certain name as a middle name. Other times, family members don’t care what you name the kid.

Luckily for Kyle and I, our family hasn’t given us much input as to what they’d like to see us name their future grandchild. The only mention was of “passing the family name down”, which will obviously happen if we have a boy. Not that there’s a legacy attached to it or anything like that. There is a quasi-tradition of making the middle name of the first-born son the first name of his grandpa (so Kyle’s dad). This is not happening. Also not happening: Giving any child the first name of another family member. No, there will be no “Jr’s” in our household!

But – The topic of discussion isn’t actually whether or not we’re naming our child after anyone. It’s about keeping our list of baby names to ourselves. You see, friends of ours had a baby girl a couple Octobers ago, and they let it slip what they would’ve named their baby if they had a boy. Last September, mutual friends had a boy and used the same name. Not cool.

Since Kyle and I have decided to find out what we’re having (which, will *hopefully* be Thursday at my ultrasound appointment!), we have been slamming our heads off the walls trying to come up with baby names. Girl names, to be more specific. Our boy name is pretty rock solid.  Regardless, we’re not telling anyone what the opposite gender’s name pick is because we do plan on having at least one more child (maybe two!) and we don’t want our names snatched up by greedy friends, especially since I know a few people also having kids this year (due after me to boot).

I don’t even know how keen I am on telling family the names we have picked out because some of them are easy to let news slip accidentally. The only thing we’re willing to tell people for now is if we’re having a boy or a girl.

I don’t know if I’m being paranoid or not, but I don’t think it’s an absolutely ridiculous idea.

Anyway – Here’s this week’s pregnancy update!

How far along? 19 weeks

How big is baby? He or she is about 6″ long from crown to bum, and weighs about 9 oz., according to BabyCenter.ca!

Total weight gain/loss:

Maternity Clothes? Nothing new, actual clothing-wise. I did, however, get a Bella Band from a girl in town for dirt cheap ($5!!!) because it was “used.” It was a screamin’ deal considering a brand-new one is $28 USD plus shipping, which I would’ve had to send to my grandparents who are snow-birding in Palm Springs and then have them ship it to Canada for me. (They don’t ship to Canada). Anyway – It’s seriously the BEST thing ever. If you’re too lazy to click the link, it looks like a tube top that you wear around your waist to hide your unbuttoned pants to make things more comfortable in your pre-pregnancy clothing. Since I’m too cheap to go on a maternity wear shopping spree just yet, it’s the best! I highly recommend it to any expectant mom!

Stretch marks? Still none!

Sleep: I can’t seem to get comfortable. It’s horrible, because I toss and turn, which wakes Kyle up, and then we’re both grumpy in the morning.

Movement: I feel more and more movement every day, it’s amazing! I can now actually feel it when I put my hand on my tummy! Kyle even got to feel a couple pokes the other night, which just warms my heart.

Food cravings: I finally satisfied my intense craving for ice cream and Chinese food all in the same night. It probably wasn’t the best idea, but my dreams weren’t too weird! I actually dreamed that we had a girl, lol.

What I miss: Taking sinus pain killers. I get THE WORST sinus headaches and not being able to take my Advil Cold & Sinus is slowly killing me, I swear. Saline nasal spray just doesn’t cut it.

What I am looking forward to: Hopefully finding out what we’re having on Thursday! We’re both soooo excited for my ultrasound – I hope baby cooperates so we can see what it is!

Milestones: Definitely Kyle feeling the baby move. It put such a huge smile on both our faces :)

Questions:
Do you plan on keeping your baby’s name a secret until he or she is born?
What about the names you like but didn’t use?

18 Weeks and Things I Hope to Never Do

There are certain things that irritate me about some pregnant women. It’s like being pregnant brings their obsession/time spent on Facebook to a whole new level of crazy, and it always seems to get worse when the baby comes.

So, I present to you, Things I hope I never do:

– Before baby is born, I don’t plan to have my ultrasound photo as my profile picture. Because someone did that once when the baby was not very baby looking and it looked like a vagina. Sorry. I’ll post it to Facebook, but won’t make it my profile picture.

– Take photos of them using the potty and post them on Facebook. That’s just horrible and cruel. Yes, “Everybody poops”, but not everybody needs to know that little Timmy just went #2 for the first time in the potty. I know I’d be embarrassed if my parents did that to me.

– Announce every day/week/month, “OMG, I can’t believe my baby is x weeks/months old!”   Also: “Happy 1 month!” It just bugs me.

– Change my Job/Occupation to “Stay at Home Mommy” or “Mommy.” I don’t know why this one bugs me so much, but it does. Maybe it makes me sound like a feminist, but being a stay at home mom is not something I’m setting out to do.

– Post about baby being the the “90th percentile” or whatever for weight and height. I don’t even know what it means, really, and it just sounds like bragging. As long as the doctor isn’t saying stuff like, “Oh my, what a sack of bones/little porker/midget” I’ll be happy. I’ll also be happy if the doctor says my kid is tall/long. Kyle and I are both short, so we’re cheering for a genetic anomaly that our kid is somehow tall.

– Have every single status update be baby related. Maybe I’ll throw something in about my dog every other day, but I definitely don’t want to have a timeline full of, “Love my baby!”, “Love being a Mommy!”, “Baby this, baby that, blah blah blah.”

Now – if I happen to do any of this I give all of you permission to send me hate mail and report my posts as spam on Facebook.

And I’m going to apologize to any readers who have actually done any of the above mentioned. I’m just going to assume that your pre-pregnant selves thought it was just as annoying. If not, then maybe I’m just a mean and awful person.

So, now that all that is covered, let’s move onto our regular programming!

How far along? 18 weeks

How big is baby? He or she is about 6″ long from crown to bum, and weighs about 7 oz., according to BabyCenter.ca!

Total weight gain/loss: At my doctor’s appointment last Tuesday I gained 5lbs! I’m actually a little excited about it, to be honest.

Maternity Clothes? My total is still two pairs of pants (one pair of jeans and one pair of work pants) and one shirt. I went to Walmart to find cheap pants ($25!) but I don’t fit their smallest size. Boo.

Stretch marks? Still none! I bought cocoa butter lotion Saturday to help prevent them.

Sleep: I’m sleeping through most of the night, only waking up about once per night. Win!

Movement: I can feel little bubbles moving about in my tummy, which is definitely baby! It’s so surreal, and it made Kyle feel like a million bucks. I can’t wait to feel actual little kicks!

Food cravings: Nothing out of the usual really. It’s probably because I’ve always gotten weird food cravings. Oh well.

What I miss: Not being scatter brained. My spelling and grammar skills have taken a shit kicking; it takes me at least three tries to type out a single sentence these days.

What I am looking forward to: Sleeping on my stomach. Is it weird that I miss this the most already?

Milestones: Feeling definite baby bubbles :) It’s so amazing! Also, not really a milestone, but the doctor to delivered me (we’ll call him Dr. F) is subbing in for my doctor (Dr. O) while he goes on vacation next month. Dr. F was actually my doctor before he retired too, who referred me to my general practitioner (we’ll call him Dr. W). Because Dr. W doesn’t deliver babies, I started seeing Dr. O. Confused yet? Basically, things have come full circle, and I’m pretty excited/thrilled that Dr. F will be seeing me while Dr. O is gone.

17 Weeks

How far along? 17 weeks!

How big is baby? He or she is about 5 1/2″ long from crown to bum, and weighs about 5 oz., about the same as a turnip, according to BabyCenter.ca!

No, I'm only having one turnip - unless my ultrasound in a couple weeks gives me some big surprises!

Total weight gain/loss: I’m not too sure, but I’m pretty sure I’ve gained at least 5lbs. I’m starting to actually feel pregnant in the way that my tummy is obviously bigger. I’ll know for sure how much I’ve gained when I go to the doctor tomorrow morning.

Maternity Clothes? I took Kyle shopping with me Thursday night last week and finally bought a pair of dressy maternity pants for work. The store was having a pretty good sale, so I was thrilled! (FYI: Maternity clothes are EXPENSIVE! It’s not even fair) I’m really trying to hold back on buying a lot of wintery clothes since I’ll be at my biggest in the spring/summer!

Stretch marks? Still none!

Sleep: Still very hit or miss, but this past week has been alright, only having to get up once every night to go to the bathroom instead of three times! I’ve really watched my liquid intake in the evening, and I think that’s helped a lot. And, not necessarily when I’m sleeping, but when I’m laying down my hips get really achy and sore. No fun.

Movement: Still no actual “Oh, that was the baby!” kind of movement, but every so often I’ll be lying down and wonder if I’m actually feeling baby flutters. Then I’ll fart and realize it’s just gas. Oh well. (TMI again, sorry)

Food cravings: I’m really wanting a breakfast burrito from McDonald’s. I was going to go out and get one yesterday morning but about 5″ of snow fell at my house and I just didn’t feel like going out onto the roads to get one. They really need to serve breakfast all day, not just until 11. I also really want waffles, lol.

What I miss: I miss being comfortable. My body seems to be aching more than ever before. It’s like a did a full day of mountain climbing or something. My hips and legs are just achy.

What I am looking forward to: Painting the baby’s room! My mom and I primed the room on the weekend (there shall be a post later this week on that) and we’re just waiting to find out what we’re having before we go and pick a colour!

Milestones: Not really a huge milestone, but getting my energy back and not gagging every time Kyle cooks his hash brown mix. The peppers in the mix used to make me want to gag, but I can finally handle the smell enough to at least comfortably sit beside him while he eats, lol!
